Yesterday was time to get a walk in this it wasn t raining hard; a minimum of not when I headed out. As is most of the case I acquired a camera to consider with me but now it was a tough decision. Was it worth actually bothering?

I was recently contacted by someone that had purchased my Nik Silver Efex book but was having troubles. I will indicate though that I sometimes make notes and rough drawings to assist develop a thought before I begin with the processing.
This involves making adjustments in Lightroom or whatever RAW converter you should produce the highest quality starting image. Quite often this requires contrast and colour adjustments that will aid the ultimate conversion to B W. For example by making all of the colours stronger I can separate them better when I convert the look to non colored documents. You can start to see the starting image below.
Here I removed the red boat for the right side as it turned out distracting. I then applied Nik Dfine to take out any noise within the image and then Nik RAW sharpener. This produced the starting image to the conversion which you can observe below.
I start while using Neutral preset as I understand what my finished image could consider looking like and I also learn how to create this. Sometimes it may help review the presets when you aren t sure what you wish to do.
First I apply a Yellow filter to aid darken the night sky and lighten the soil slightly. I also boost the filter strength to 100% in the default 50%. My final part of Silver Efex should be to add in some grain. I gave up while using grain sliders previously but recently they have got been improved and therefore are now quite good. I use a grain setting of 400 which is rather fine. I used to shoot using Kodak TMax so comparable to the fine grained films.
In the earlier version on the image I used Nik Analogue Efex to put in a vignette and film boarder admittedly that it was a slide film boarder but I liked it. In this version I dodge and burn in Photoshop to produce the look at the very start of the post. I also tweaked the contrast further using another filter called Contrast Master from PhotoWiz. I made these final changes differently because I took additional time over the edit, deciding I wanted for making an A3 print on the finished image.

I captured this image of the frosty yesterday morning around the edge of an car park. It did raise a number of eyebrows from passersby. I made a number of variations on the image using different conversions, some high key some low key and many high contrast but none ticked your box for me.
Then I remembered a different Nik programme that I had downloaded whilst attempting to fix a difficulty with Lightroom 5.2 still not fixed and thought I would give it a try. The filter is termed Analogue Efex and lets you simulate all kinds of camera and film effects. Usually I am not astounded by such applications as well as be honest, looking with the presets I wasn t hopeful. I produced their colour version then converted this to the grayscale version above with Silver Efex Pro.

The response is relatively straight forward for the reason that the user is shooting in RAW format. But why then your odd colour?

Here are 10 free presets I want to share for all of us who are using Silver Efex Pro 2.

Most of such presets happen to be designed for photos much like the one above - landscapes with green foreground and blue sky. Scroll down to consider a have a look at what each preset does for the sample image.
Inspired by artist Gregory Colberts video Ashes and Snow.
This is actually a strong sepia toned preset I meant to match a few of my favorite scenes in the movie.
Soft and bright highlights with dark vignette and several film grain.
Balanced to preserve most details within the highlights and shadows. I dont typically utilize this preset for landscapes but it really works well for portraits or another work.
This preset has nothing with regards to Gandhi - I thought that it was a fun name to get a preset.
This is near Full Dynamic Range though with more intense shadows and slightly lighter highlights.
Dark and moody, this preset sacrifices much in the shadows and many midtones.
Blue skies are rendered flat, greens and yellows are darkened. Shadows creep into your midtones.
Dark, moody, plus a little foreboding. I wanted to produce a preset that had been edgy, but kept the highlights. I added a brown paper toning making the shadows more bold due to this effect.
An interesting consist of my more typical darker landscapes. When the Soft Contrast slider is adjusted see my walkthrough the darker midtones are brightened, though the darker shadows are kept. This makes a much more dynamic grayscale image, but I have found so it does not work on all images.
This could be the foundational preset for the series of Silver Taint presets that features a sepia paper tone and cyanotype color.
From this preset you could make some further tweaks to generate more bold and dynamic statements much like the one below.
This can be a variation in the above preset, with stronger shadows.
