Ben apparently the final windows update has guffed something up. Same thing happened in my experience. After the update I had no internet, then I reboot and internet is back. Next reboot and comparable to you poof no desktop or task manager. I went into windows system update and restore to prior to probably the most recent windows updates and everything was back in normal. That is totally shoddy of MS.
