have the one that is capable of log in internal as sysdba signing in and alter these users. those accounts use OS authentication to id the consumer and do not have to have a password. or, for those who have access to any dba account, use that will just affect the users.

Are you will be able using 8.0.4 to attempt in order to connect as sysdba? From a Metalink posting I found: Connection as SYSDBA can be produced only using oracle8i - i.e ver 8.1.5 or higher on all platforms. However, there is certainly problem while using error message displayed. 8.0.4 gives ORA-12154: TNS: can't resolve service name that is misleading. if you log in to the proper OS account for the same machine, you can use connect internal or as sysdba with out them. on unix, the DBA group or whatever group you specified for instance can connect internal locally without having a password.

sorry, don't possess 8.0 anywhere. do not possess windows on any nonetheless it seems all to easy to solve - - produce the password file? signing in as the guy who installed oracle - they should be inside the right group

Hi Tom, First, I worship you. Thank you for this site and being so cool. I have your complete books, read your site and pray that someday I can setup an interview and say thank you. Now, to my question. I have read and browse and study your explanations on internal, os authentication, sysdba, sysoper priviledges. I think I understand them. On my Oracle 8.1.7 environment, I am capable of login as sysdba when I were not granted the sysdba priviledge! connect foosomeREMOTEmachine as sysdba, asks for your password and logs me in as sysdba. once in, I can see any table belonging to sys! Yikes! I have checked that I am not within the password file Vpasswdusers. I am also NOT logging into someREMOTEmachine locally. Can you please explain why this will be so. I use a feeling, that this is really a REALLY stupid question. If so, apologies ahead of time.
go speak to your OS admin, theyve put everyone inside power user group also, whats within your

Hi Tom, Sorry to maintain posting on the site. But I think I have worked out the answer towards the question I posted you can now login as sysdba. Ofcourse, just the people who possess the sysdba priviledge should be competent to login as sysdba. I verfied this by looking for the password file contents vpwfileusers to find out only internal and sys. Also checked the sessionprivs table to seek out only a number of priviledges not the 100 for sysdba. Just wanted and keep you and anybody else who gets confused like I did, posted. Thanks Tom. One follow-up question. We are in a very Windows cluster env and I develop the spfile in conjunction with all adminORACLESID type stuff around the cluster drive. The ORACLEHOME has to be using a local drive. Can I change the positioning where the password file from ORACLEHOMEdatabase into a different directory like I do together with the spfile? Thanks again.
not that Im aware about - - each instance needs its very own. how's it going sharing an spfile amongst instances?

Its a Failsafe cluster, Database is Active/Passive Each node includes a text file from the Local ORACLEHOMEdatabase directory that point on the shared drive init file. - -- - --- - -------- I just wished to try and make sys password changes around the cluster somewhat more stream lined.
