Turn right into a Photoshop Jedi with all the best kept secrets within the galaxy.
Smart Object Stack Mode is an effective way to reduce noise and take away unwanted objects coming from a scene. For example, should you have a photo of your art gallery stuffed with people but would like it to be displayed for an empty gallery, or of an street with passing cars but need it to be a clear chair street.
Or when you have a very low light situation with many different grain, it is possible to take several pictures and Photoshop will combine those to lessen the grain.
This reveals a great deal of possibilities!
Disclaimer: This is often a Photoshop blog so while I am wanting to be as un-biased as is possible, I can t depart from my bias towards Photoshop.
Updated July 5, 2015 to are the reason for updates on Photoshop
I noticed a great deal of my fellow designers commencing to use Sketch, and frankly, I was puzzled. At least on top, Sketch was missing countless features which can be crucial to my workflow. So, I chose to dig deeper and pay attention to the pros and cons of every app, and whether my preference for Photoshop was still being warranted. Could the pros of Sketch outweigh the cons?
Below may be the complete Google Sheets feature comparison list I developed. I also included some features that happen to be available on both. Those were features that some individuals may not realize are saved to Photoshop or Sketch since earlier versions on the apps didn t include them.
I ll seek to update it as being new features appear in and correct it if I find I got anything wrong.
Note: The cells while using black top right corner acquire more information in case you hover to them, and several cells contain links to blogs that explain those features in greater detail.
This Google Sheet can be a long list with plenty of little features. Features that alone wouldn't be a reason to change to or far from either app. So I want to focus on a couple of bigger differences that actually matter in my experience as Graphic Designer.
Update July 5, 2015 - Photoshop 2015 featuring Artboards!
I am convinced that whoever doesn t use Layer Comps just doesn t know very well what they are missing. Especially since 2014 Photoshop update which make it easier to copy settings in one Layer Comp to the others.
However, it doesn t surprise me more people don t make use of it because there IS a learning curve into it, therefore it may be a bit of the brain f!% in the beginning.
So how can Layer Comps vary from Artboards?
Artboards are great in the event you re designing independent layouts that share little reely with one another. You can also zoom out and examine your whole canvas with your screens though there s an easy solution for your too involving Layer Comps, Linked Smart Objects and Smart Object States, that's shown below in my examples
Artboards are really easy to understand and place up, but when you are working away at an app flow, with a lot of shared elements between screens along with lots different states color/position/visibility - Artboards turn into a pain to iterate on. Layer Comps are harder to put together but much more powerful and better to manage since your design evolves.
With Layer Comps if there s a layer that appears in numerous screens, you should only need one demonstration of that layer, you only toggle its visibility, position and styling between screens. That means that in case you change that layer, it changes it in your entire screens. Yes, you'll be able to do that with Symbols in Sketch, though symbols you may t modify the position of your symbol across your entire artboards, nor would you edit the style of an symbol to obtain it blue within a screen and white alternatively. With Layer Comps you'll be able to.
When you re designing an icon or any small illustration, you need to see the two details zoomed in and exactly how the icon looks when at 100%. On Sketch, meaning zooming out and in as you develop the icon - zoom in to edit it, zoom to see exactly what it looks like. On Photoshop it is possible to have 2 windows for the similar file alongside each other, one at 1600% plus the other at 100% - thus having the best of all possible!
To find it in action, open a document then click Window Arrange New Window for doc name
Before digging deeper I thought to myself Oh, Sketch has Symbols, they will be just like Smart Objects! But then I found out that on Sketch you may t edit the style of any Symbol without altering all symbols - I mean should you do so beyond the Symbol as an alternative to editing the Symbol itself. So if within a of my screens my icon is blue and on the other instrument screen it s white, on Sketch meaning I need 2 Symbols - defeating part in the purpose of your symbol. If your app has plenty of icons and you might be asked to update those icons, it ll become a pain to update them in 2 places.
Symbols on Sketch may t change sizes. If you resize one Symbol, all Symbols are resized. With Smart Objects I may have 1 large Smart Object that will also be shown being an avatar inside a different screen. I update 1 Smart Object and all of my images, big or small, are updated.
Symbols on Sketch can also be hard to nest into the other. Apparently there is often a way nevertheless it s most certainly not as simple as dragging it into the other person because I couldn t figure it out.
These are very the latest features that have turn into a crucial part of my workflow. With Smart Object States each Smart Object will surely have as many variations of it as being you want. This works with all the power of Layer Comps, each showing as being a State within the Property Panel on your own Smart Object.
As a sample, I possess a PSD with plenty of dummy avatars. It s an individual PSD nonetheless it includes several avatars. So if ever I need an avatar, I place this PSD being a Linked Smart Object and alter the states to find out all those avatars. If ever I desire to change images from that assortment of avatars, I change it within a place and many types of my documents are updated.
You can make use of it to develop a library of widgets, avatars or create different button states. And in the event you use Layer Comps to your screen designs, it is possible to even mimic one on the advantages connected with an Artboard by building a new document using a Linked Smart Object for your screens, using States to show your design states in the single canvas.
I m sure I lost many of you here. Like I said, it s tough to grasp, but extremely powerful if you do.
If you wish to learn more about Linked Smart Objects and Smart Object states read this post by Bradee Evans, the lead UI designer for Photoshop at Adobe:
Once again, Marc Edward s Post goes deep engrossed:
If something is possible on Photoshop, you'll be able to almost certainly bet there s a shortcut for doing this. It may be that Sketch has shortcuts that I don t be aware of, but outside the body there are lots of shortcuts that I use that I couldn t find on Sketch understanding that would really slow me down!
If you wish to turned into a Photoshop shortcut master, have a look at these posts:
This will be the brand new feature and that is totally killer. You can produce a Library for each and every app, OS, product, etc. The Library may include a Color Scheme, Smart Objects, Layers, Layer Styles and Text Styles.
These Libraries are offered from any document you re working away at and even across multiple computers since they're synced over the Cloud.
Adobe also explained that sharing Libraries with teammates are going to be available within the next point release. And that will probably be super powerful for design-teams taking care of the same project.
Shared Libraries are here! You can now share and sync Smart Objects with colleagues!
As far as I could see, Sketch doesn t have anything that compares.
Sketch is stuffed with very basic rendering bugs that may never make past Adobe s QA testing.
Photoshop isn t perfect needless to say, however, these days it s considerably more solid application and produces more predictable results.
I have a very list of many these rendering and re-draw issues, many of which increasingly becoming fixed with each update - so I don t desire to bash about this point excessive. My only comment is the fact that at the time of writing, Sketch doesn t seem ready for prime-time as being a professional tool to me.
Sketch excels on some straight-forward but super useful features, and I hope they each come to Photoshop soon!
Update July 5, 2015 - Photoshop 2015 presently has Artboards!
To me the only real advantage Artboards deliver over Layer Comps is from the ability to see your entire screens a single place. But as stated before, Layer Comps give me lots of advantages that artboards alone can t match. Though since you ll see about the Photoshop file linked below, there s an instant solution to mimic that advantage.
Ideally, Photoshop can have a solution to visualize all Layer Comps in a single screen automagically - like that you get the top of all possible worlds.
With iOS 7, blurring content became a design trend and Sketch makes it simple to do so. You just draw a square over what you would like to blur and employ the Blur Background feature - such as an Adjustment Layer in After Effects if you ever used that.
On Photoshop the one way yo do this is should you put your complete objects in the Smart Object and after that blur the Smart Object. Or worse, rasterize a replica of your objects and blur them. Not ideal.
Update July 5, 2015 - Photoshop 2015 is now offering Multiple Styles per Layer
As in the update of June 2015 Photoshop allows approximately 10 from the same Style per Layer. Only the styles together with the button near to them might be duplicated.
The current solution on Photoshop is always to put your layer in a very Group after which add a Layer Style within the Group, but that ain t pretty and doesn t always work while you want, so in that case your only option is usually to dupe the Layer, set its fill to 0% after which style it.
This is usually a wonderful feature too. Say you might have this Drop Shadow that s utilized in 15 different places with your app, after which you plan to adjust it. Without Shared Styles you will need to copy paste styles to 15 different layers.
Yeah, seriously, this isn t possible on Photoshop, no, really, it isn t. You can duplicate a layer but that s not a similar as copying/pasting. I sometimes focus on files that contain 300 layers and I need to copy a layer through the bottom up and I must drag finished . all how up. killme
Using Photoshop sometimes appears like flying a jet. It s got 1000 little buttons and knobs everywhere, a few of which you rarely touch.
Sketch alternatively hand, is definitely an focused app. When I opened it once I needed hardly any guidance to begin with using it. It s such as a Zen Garden in contrast.
However, Adobe recently announced Project Recess at Adobe Max, which aims to unravel this problem. I got to experiment with with it and It s still in early stages nonetheless it looks very promising! You have the whole power of Photoshop, though with a more focused and cleaner UI.
On Photoshop 2015 released in June, you are able to access the modern interface by looking at Preferences Technology Preview and checking Design Space Preview. Click OK and you also ll find it.
The best strategy to see the differences in workflow involving the two apps would be to create precisely the same design on both Photoshop and Sketch. For this I produced basic messaging application and my buddy and Sketch user Jake Desaulniers redesigned it in Sketch.
On the Photoshop version I used Layer Comps, Smart Object States and Linked Smart Objects heavily to really make it easy to iterate on.
When picking out a Smart Object Layer, be sure you open the Properties Panel which is why its states.
I also launched a separate PSD called Messages where I used Smart Object States to preview my Layer Comps. Since it s a Linked Smart Object, that file updates automatically as I save my main file.
Layer Comps mean I have only 1 instance of the layer, as opposed to 1 layer per Artboard - this implies if I change anything that Layer position, visibility, style or content adjustments can easily be used on all other Screens.
If I update the leading Profile Pic, their big image plus the avatar get updated on all screens.
Smart Object States and Linked Smart Objects ensure it is easy to control and make changes to your different contact cells and avatars - and also re-use them in other PSDs if I so choose.
On the Sketch version Jake took benefit from Share Object Styles and Shared Text Styles so it will be easy to update bits and pieces within the fly across each of the artboards.
Shared Object Styles, although it is not used heavily in this particular example allows him to update colors, shadows along with effects on multiple objects at one time.
Symbols usually are not as robust as they may be in Photoshop, but they also can still be utilized in some cases where objects don t change as often.
Using the companion iOS app you may flip through artboards and pages which has a flick with the thumb, that's great for sharing on device in presentations
Creating the blur effect about the last artboard is manufactured really easy with all the Background Blur effect. Just place a layer over everything and layers under it's going to get blurred.
What I found through my quick research is for a graphic artist both apps is capable of doing similar quality outcomes. Where they differ most is inside workflow, render reliability and ways in which easy it is usually to iterate on designs.
If all that you are doing is copying a design and need to make NO changes going without running shoes, it is possible to do that equally quickly on either app.
But due to Layer Comps, Smart Objects Linked and States, Libraries and Actions, I can make changes to my designs quickly and have them updated across all of my screens and in some cases across documents within a few moments. Sketch s Shared Layer Styles are excellent, his or her aren t enough to me.
And this is when I found I change from my fellow designers - I am clearly less patient and deeply reliant on those features and so on shortcuts to iterate quickly on my small designs. If I ever should perform repetitive tasks boost things manually I get very irritable - so Sketch wouldn't be a good tool for me personally at this point.
It really just is determined by what matters most to your account.
They include some wrong and dated statements regarding Photoshop features or lack thereof - but it really s likely this very post also may include wrong statements about Sketch too.
If comments are available in with anything I got wrong about Sketch, or stuff that might be possible by utilizing plugins, I ll ensure that I update the post and also the Google Sheet.
Great article detailing utilizing Linked Smart Objects and Smart Object States for collaborative design.
The already great plugin presenting find and replace!! I can t even handle each of the goodness today s bringing!
Yes! Another amazing update from Adobe can be obtained today! I m really proud from the Photoshop team for making countless great improvements for this already unbeatable tool!
This will be the panels of the panels! You can now create libraries of common elements used with your designs.
If I m designing an app or even a website for instance, I can produce a Library that will include all common icons, logos, palettes, Layer Styles, Text Styles and also Adjustment Layers and Brushes.
I don t plan to go in-depth regarding the funkiness in the subject, so I recommend reading these 3 links to find the full picture.
In short, the iPhone 6 Plus are these claims kind of faux 3x. So your Photoshop canvas needs to be set to 1242 2208 however the device will downsize it to 1080 1920, which in a very 2x world would resemble the equivalent of 828 1472. brainboom
A 1x, 10px tal element renders as 1.5mm on 163 PPI
A 2x, 20px tall element renders as 1.5mm on 326 PPI
A 3x, 30px tall element also renders as 1.5mm on 401 PPI
Here s a visual representation that hopefully explains what s taking place.
Before you only go download it, ok, i'll explain the thinking behind the grid.
If you wish to sub-divide those in to the largest possible squares you must find the highest common divisor. On the iPhone 4 that may be 32px, about the iPhone 5 it s 16px.
Traditionally designers taking care of apps or websites, often end up with numerous duplicated layers that look exactly the same. This is because they ll design each screen in the separate file, separate artboard, or separate folders inside a file.
The result's that should you make any small switch the signal from any object one screen the thing itself, the fashion or the position you may ought to update the object alternatively screens. This can make creating variations and iterations an extremely slow an painful process - then when things are slow and painful I find that people are discouraged from being fully creative and from improving our designs.
Layer comps solve this issue beautifully! They allow someone to toggle visibility position and style of one's layers and save those states. So any layer used in a of your screens might be used again with your other screen. No more duplicate stuff to handle!
I hear a few of you saying but I can simply use symbolssmart objects!. Well, sure helps, therefore you probably wish to use them anyway. Bu should you want to move a title 2 pixels up a single screen, and still have it be described as a different color in most screens yet not others, Smart Objects won t assist you much.
On the most up-to-date Photoshop CC update released within the 18th of June, Layer Comps got much more powerful and within this video I explain to you how I use them.
If you've got any questions, please permit me to know from the comments or on twitter either on phtshp or edwardsanchez.
Pretty nifty strategy to visualize default shortcuts for Photoshop and also other apps!
Quick tip using a better strategy to create divider lines using text dashes rather then vector lines.
One more thing I forgot to mention from the video is the fact you ought to choose NONE for text antialiasing, otherwise the lines may seem blurred with half pixels.
Play with some other fonts to have different a line thickness.
I recently heard that many people be familiar with this feature, despite the fact that it s been known for about per year.
Photoshop didn t use to render fonts adequately for digital mediums, who use sub-pixel rendering to anti-alias fonts - which makes them appear slightly thicker and not as thick as being the Strong settings.
As a consequence, should you wanted to mock-up a web site or app, the font rendering options never quite matched just how fonts appear when loaded with a browser or mobile device.
Photoshop then added two new rendering options, Mac LCD and Mac, which solves the issue beautifully!
Non-Linear History is really a hidden feature that may be handy for iterating!
Today we released something called Asset Handoff that bridges the gap between design and development. We re excited to exhibit it to your account.
If you don t trust Auto-Save, from it it in time breaks down like it did personally, build Keyboard Maestro to also hit S on other shortcuts you utilize regularly.
I have several common shortcuts carrying this out, here it is together with the Return key for instance:
I likewise have it saving every 3 minutes, in case!
I recently did a google search to find out if anyone had converted instagram filters to photoshop actions. After not coming up with any results, I decided to determine if I could get it done myself. I didn t obtain a 100% exact match, nonetheless it s pretty close.
Im beginning with Nashville then will combine soon. Let me know any feedback. I ll update this post when I combine.
Update 3 : Sutro, Lomo-fi, Inkwell, Lord Kelvin, Walden added. Also added 5 borders which could be applied with one-click.

1. Cardigan- got the under shirt and added heart elbow patches! Comes in a number of versions, is usually found as being the black swatches inside striped cardigan section.
2. Glittery skirt- much like some other cc skirts around, but glittery! Comes in colors as shown, an independent item.
3. Glittery bra- mostly just made the theifs to match the skirt, but I figured you could like them. Found as being a separate item.
4. Lace knee high stockings- In colors as shown, found being a separate item within the accessory section, near tights!
tag me once you wear my cc in case you want, it truly makes my day to determine people with it!
Hello there! I was wondering when it s alright if I recolor/texture the Holiday Scarf? It s super pretty! I will needless to say credit you fully and tag you! 8
hello! i m seeking to figure out how you can convert an individual pair of eyebrows from ts3 to ts4, what is the tut around that might help me your?: thanks big money!
I don t know of your tutorial however it s super simple. Using one in the things like s4s choose an alternative like build a new after which save the dds file from the s4 eyebrow, and utilizing s3pe save the dds on the s3 eyebrow. Then using photoshop you recently replace the alpha on the s4 using the s3 alpha and same to the texture!
When you have made your Sarcastic trait using Zerbu s tool, how do you package the file when you finally had exported the trait? Thanks!
You use s4pe. You go to one in the tabs towards the top and drop import and import ALL with the files you saved then save becoming :
Where d you have that cas background from? If you ve created it, just how do you make backgrounds?
I got! And yeah should you look on lumialoversims blog pretty far in that area s the file you have to change and I think a tutorial about how also. It s really quite simple, you recently add your image towards the file in photoshop and save it and hang it within your mods folder!
Hey! So I m unclear if this specific trait has been manufactured yet, but I chosen to upload it anyway. Essentially it s all within the name Sarcastic trait, meaning this trait gives your sims a personality that's fiesty, funny, playful, flirty, social, as well as times insulting to others. It s a social trait because doing so mainly involves interactions web-sites and becoming popular/unpopular with those throughout the sim.
Let me understand how it works out in your case, and because of zerbu for producing this possible!
Getting better at photoshop I think! Hopefully eventually this hair will be considered a reality inside game, I mean.
Lol thanks! Okay last question, I thought the white img file was the texture, so meaning the texture file wasn t included I guess? So does that mean I have to pick one up?
Yeah you don t need to use the one inside the sims 3 package to the texture but in the event you want you are able to use the white one inside rbg channel as being the texture and just alter the colors, as long since you use the alpha channel for your alpha along with the rbg channel to the texture:
