Turn in to a Photoshop Jedi together with the best kept secrets inside galaxy.
Smart Object Stack Mode is an excellent way to reduce noise and take off unwanted objects coming from a scene. For example, should you have a photo connected with an art gallery packed with people but like it to be displayed being an empty gallery, or of the street with passing cars but would like it to be a clear street.
Or when you have a very low light situation with plenty of grain, you may take several pictures and Photoshop will combine those to limit the grain.
This opens a lots of possibilities!
Disclaimer: This is often a Photoshop blog so while I am looking to be as un-biased as you can, I can t escape from my bias towards Photoshop.
Updated July 5, 2015 to take into account updates on Photoshop
I noticed a great deal of my fellow designers commencing to use Sketch, and frankly, I was puzzled. At least on top, Sketch looked like there was missing numerous features which might be crucial to my workflow. So, I decided to dig deeper and pay attention to the pros and cons of the app, and whether my preference for Photoshop had been warranted. Could the pros of Sketch outweigh the cons?
Below may be the complete Google Sheets feature comparison list I developed. I also included some features that happen to be available on both. Those were features that many people may not realize are saved to Photoshop or Sketch since earlier versions from the apps didn t include them.
I ll make an effort to update it new features appear in and correct it if I find I got anything wrong.
Note: The cells while using black top right corner acquire more information when you hover in it, and several cells contain links to blog articles that explain those features in greater detail.
This Google Sheet can be a long list with a lot of little features. Features that alone may not be a reason to modify to or from either app. So I wish to focus on several bigger differences that actually matter for me as Graphic Designer.
Update July 5, 2015 - Photoshop 2015 featuring Artboards!
I am convinced that whoever doesn t use Layer Comps just doesn t know very well what they are missing. Especially considering that the 2014 Photoshop update that means it is easier to copy settings derived from one of Layer Comp to the others.
However, it doesn t surprise me more people don t put it to use because there IS a learning curve with it, also it can be a bit of any brain f!% at first.
So just how do Layer Comps alter from Artboards?
Artboards are great in case you re designing independent layouts that share little or free with 1 another. You can also zoom out and look at your whole canvas with your screens though there s an effective solution for the too involving Layer Comps, Linked Smart Objects and Smart Object States, that's shown down the page in my examples
Artboards are super easy to understand and hang up up, but in the event you are working away at an app flow, with many different shared elements regarding the screens with lots different states color/position/visibility - Artboards turned into a pain to iterate on. Layer Comps are harder to put together but much more powerful and much easier to manage because your design evolves.
With Layer Comps if there s a layer that appears in lots of screens, you simply need one demonstration of that layer, you simply toggle its visibility, position and styling between screens. That means that in case you change that layer, it changes it in your entire screens. Yes, you may do by investing in Symbols in Sketch, though symbols it is possible to t customize the position of any symbol across your entire artboards, nor could you edit the style of any symbol to get it blue a single screen and white on the other side. With Layer Comps you are able to.
When you re designing an icon or any small illustration, you need to see the two details zoomed in and just how the icon looks when at 100%. On Sketch, this implies zooming out and in as you focus on the icon - zoom in to edit it, zoom in the market to see what it really looks like. On Photoshop it is possible to have 2 windows for the similar file side-by-side, one at 1600% as well as the other at 100% - thus receiving the best of all possible!
To visualize it in action, open a document then click Window Arrange New Window for doc name
Before digging deeper I thought to myself Oh, Sketch has Symbols, they will be just like Smart Objects! But then I found out that on Sketch you are able to t edit the style of any Symbol without altering all symbols - I mean in case you do so beyond your Symbol as opposed to editing the Symbol itself. So if in a single of my screens my icon is blue and on the other half screen it s white, on Sketch it means I need 2 Symbols - defeating part in the purpose of an symbol. If your app has a great deal of icons and you happen to be asked to update those icons, it ll certainly be a pain to update all of them in 2 places.
Symbols on Sketch could also t change sizes. If you resize one Symbol, all Symbols are resized. With Smart Objects I might have 1 large Smart Object that could also be shown for an avatar in the different screen. I update 1 Smart Object and all of my images, big or small, are updated.
Symbols on Sketch are hard to nest into the other. Apparently there is usually a way but it really s definitely not as simple as dragging it into the other person because I couldn t figure it out.
These are very extra features that have turn into a crucial part of my workflow. With Smart Object States each Smart Object might have as many variations of it as being you want. This works using the power of Layer Comps, each showing to be a State about the Property Panel in your Smart Object.
As a sample, I have a very PSD with numerous dummy avatars. It s an individual PSD nonetheless it includes several avatars. So if ever I need an avatar, I place this PSD like a Linked Smart Object and affect the states to determine all those avatars. If ever I would like to change images from that variety of avatars, I change it within a place and my documents are updated.
You can put it to use to develop a library of widgets, avatars or create different button states. And in the event you use Layer Comps on your screen designs, you'll be able to even mimic one with the advantages connected with an Artboard by setting up a new document which has a Linked Smart Object for your screens, which utilizes States to show your entire design states inside a single canvas.
I m sure I lost several of you here. Like I said, it s not easy to grasp, but extremely powerful after you do.
If you would like to learn more about Linked Smart Objects and Smart Object states read this post by Bradee Evans, the lead UI designer for Photoshop at Adobe:
Once again, Marc Edward s Post goes deep with it:
If something can be achieved on Photoshop, you'll be able to almost certainly bet there s a shortcut correctly. It may be that Sketch has shortcuts that I don t learn about, but at first glance there are plenty of shortcuts that I use that I couldn t find on Sketch understanding that would really slow me down!
If you need to turned into a Photoshop shortcut master, look at these posts:
This could be the brand new feature that is totally killer. You can build a Library for each and every app, OS, product, etc. The Library can incorporate a Color Scheme, Smart Objects, Layers, Layer Styles and Text Styles.
These Libraries can be found from any document you re working away at and even across multiple computers since these are synced from the Cloud.
Adobe also said that sharing Libraries with teammates will probably be available inside next point release. And that will probably be super powerful for design-teams working away at the same project.
Shared Libraries are here! You can now share and sync Smart Objects with colleagues!
As far as I could see, Sketch doesn t ever have anything that compares.
Sketch is filled with very basic rendering bugs that may never make past Adobe s QA testing.
Photoshop isn t perfect naturally, however, these days it s additional solid application and produces more predictable results.
I use a list of many these rendering and re-draw issues, many of which are becoming fixed with each update - so I don t need to bash within this point an excessive amount. My only comment is the fact at the time of writing, Sketch doesn t seem ready for prime-time like a professional tool for me personally.
Sketch excels on some straight-forward but super useful features, and I hope each of them come to Photoshop soon!
Update July 5, 2015 - Photoshop 2015 presently has Artboards!
To me the sole advantage Artboards produce over Layer Comps is within the ability to see your complete screens in a single place. But as stated before, Layer Comps give me plenty of advantages that artboards alone can t match. Though because you ll see within the Photoshop file linked below, there s a fast solution to mimic that advantage.
Ideally, Photoshop can have a solution to visualize all Layer Comps in a single screen automatically - this way you get the best of all possible.
With iOS 7, blurring content became a design trend and Sketch makes it simplallows you to do so. You just draw a square over what you need to blur and make use of the Blur Background feature - just like an Adjustment Layer in After Effects in the event you used that.
On Photoshop the only real way yo accomplish that is should you put all of your objects inside of a Smart Object and after that blur the Smart Object. Or worse, rasterize a replica of your objects and blur them. Not ideal.
Update July 5, 2015 - Photoshop 2015 presently has Multiple Styles per Layer
As on the update of June 2015 Photoshop allows around 10 from the same Style per Layer. Only the styles with all the button close to them may be duplicated.
The current solution on Photoshop is always to put your layer within a Group and after that add a Layer Style around the Group, but that ain t pretty and doesn t always work since you want, so in that case your only option is usually to dupe the Layer, set its fill to 0% and after that style it.
This is really a wonderful feature too. Say you might have this Drop Shadow that s found in 15 different places within your app, then you elect to adjust it. Without Shared Styles you need to copy paste styles to 15 different layers.
Yeah, seriously, this isn t possible on Photoshop, no, really, it isn t. You can duplicate a layer but that s not a similar as copying/pasting. I sometimes focus on files which have 300 layers and I need to copy a layer from your bottom to the peak and I should drag the one thing all how up. killme
Using Photoshop sometimes feels as though flying a jet. It s got 1000 little buttons and knobs in all places, many of which you rarely touch.
Sketch alternatively hand, is certainly a focused app. When I opened it once I needed hardly any guidance to begin with using it. It s just like a Zen Garden by comparison.
However, Adobe recently announced Project Recess at Adobe Max, which aims to eliminate this problem. I got to experiment with with it and It s still in early stages but it really looks very promising! You have the full power of Photoshop, but a more focused and cleaner UI.
On Photoshop 2015 released in June, it is possible to access the brand new interface when you go to Preferences Technology Preview and checking Design Space Preview. Click OK and you also ll notice.
The best strategy to see the differences in workflow relating to the two apps is always to create precisely the same design on both Photoshop and Sketch. For this I developed a basic messaging application and my buddy and Sketch user Jake Desaulniers redesigned it in Sketch.
On the Photoshop version I used Layer Comps, Smart Object States and Linked Smart Objects heavily to restore easy to iterate on.
When picking out a Smart Object Layer, you should definitely open the Properties Panel thus its states.
I also launched a separate PSD called Messages where I used Smart Object States to preview all of my Layer Comps. Since it s a Linked Smart Object, that file updates automatically as I save my main file.
Layer Comps mean I simply have 1 instance of the layer, instead of 1 layer per Artboard - what this means is if I change anything that Layer position, visibility, style or content the alterations can easily be placed on all other Screens.
If I update the principle Profile Pic, the two big image plus the avatar get updated on all screens.
Smart Object States and Linked Smart Objects ensure it is easy to handle and make changes to your different contact cells and avatars - along with re-use them in other PSDs if I so choose.
On the Sketch version Jake took benefit from Share Object Styles and Shared Text Styles to really make it easy to update bits and pieces about the fly across all of the artboards.
Shared Object Styles, whilst not used heavily in this particular example allows him to update colors, shadows as well as other effects on multiple objects at the same time.
Symbols aren't as robust as these are in Photoshop, nevertheless they can still be employed in some cases where objects don t change as much.
Using the companion iOS app you may flip through artboards and pages that has a flick on the thumb, and that is great for sharing on device in presentations
Creating the blur effect around the last artboard is manufactured really easy using the Background Blur effect. Just place a layer together with everything and all of layers under it can get blurred.
What I found through my quick research is always that for a designer both apps can do similar quality outcomes. Where they differ most is inside workflow, render reliability and exactly how easy it should be to iterate on designs.
If all you're doing is copying a design and desire to make NO changes into it, you may do that equally quickly on either app.
But as a result of Layer Comps, Smart Objects Linked and States, Libraries and Actions, I can make changes to my designs simply and have them updated across all of my screens and in some cases across documents in seconds. Sketch s Shared Layer Styles are excellent, his or her aren t enough in my opinion.
And this is how I found I are different from my fellow designers - I am clearly much less patient and deeply reliant on those features and so on shortcuts to iterate quickly in this little designs. If I ever ought to perform repetitive tasks increase things manually I get very irritable - so Sketch couldn't survive a good tool to me at this point.
It really just will depend on what matters most to your account.
They include some wrong and dated statements regarding Photoshop features or lack thereof - nonetheless it s likely this very post comes with wrong statements about Sketch too.
If comments are available in with anything I got wrong about Sketch, or items that might be possible by utilizing plugins, I ll ensure that I update the post along with the Google Sheet.
Great article detailing using Linked Smart Objects and Smart Object States for collaborative design.
The already great plugin is now offering find and replace!! I can t even handle each of the goodness today s bringing!
Yes! Another amazing update from Adobe can be obtained today! I m really proud in the Photoshop team for making countless great improvements for this already unbeatable tool!
This will be the panels of most panels! You can now create libraries of common elements used in your designs.
If I m designing an app or even a website as an example, I can build a Library that can include all common icons, logos, pallettes, Layer Styles, Text Styles and also Adjustment Layers and Brushes.
I don t want to go in-depth in regards to the funkiness from the subject, so I recommend reading these 3 links to obtain the full picture.
In short, the iPhone 6 Plus is this fact kind of faux 3x. So your Photoshop canvas really should be set to 1242 2208 even so the device will downsize it to 1080 1920, which in a very 2x world would resemble the equivalent of 828 1472. brainboom
A 1x, 10px tal element renders as 1.5mm on 163 PPI
A 2x, 20px tall element renders as 1.5mm on 326 PPI
A 3x, 30px tall element also renders as 1.5mm on 401 PPI
Here s a visual representation that hopefully explains what s happening.
Before you recently go download it, allow me to explain the thinking behind the grid.
If you need to sub-divide those to the largest possible squares you have to find the highest common divisor. On the iPhone 4 that is certainly 32px, around the iPhone 5 it s 16px.
Traditionally designers working away at apps or websites, often end up with lots of duplicated layers that look a similar. This is because they ll design each screen within a separate file, separate artboard, or separate folders inside of a file.
The result can be that should you make any small switch the signal from any object using one screen the thing itself, the form or the position you may have to update the object on the other half screens. This can make creating variations and iterations a really slow an painful process - then when things are slow and painful I find that individuals are discouraged from being fully creative and from improving our designs.
Layer comps solve this issue beautifully! They allow that you toggle visibility position and style within your layers and save those states. So any layer used in a single of your screens might be used again as part of your other screen. No more duplicate stuff to handle!
I hear a few of you saying but I can simply use symbolssmart objects!. Well, sure helps, and you also probably would like to use them anyway. Bu when you want to move a title 2 pixels up in a screen, and have absolutely it become a different color in many screens however, not others, Smart Objects won t assist you much.
On the most up-to-date Photoshop CC update released for the 18th of June, Layer Comps got far more powerful and with this video I provide you with how I use them.
If you have any queries, please permit me to know inside comments or on twitter either on phtshp or edwardsanchez.
Pretty nifty approach to visualize default shortcuts for Photoshop along with apps!
Quick tip with a better method to create divider lines using text dashes rather than vector lines.
One more thing I forgot to mention within the video is the fact you ought to decide NONE for text antialiasing, otherwise the lines can take place blurred with half pixels.
Play with various fonts to have different a line thickness.
I recently heard that doesn't many people be aware of this feature, though it s existed for about annually.
Photoshop didn t use to render fonts well for digital mediums, involving sub-pixel rendering to anti-alias fonts - which makes them appear slightly thicker yet not as thick as being the Strong settings.
As an end result, when you wanted to mock-up a web site or app, the font rendering options never quite matched the way in which fonts appear when loaded on the browser or mobile device.
Photoshop then added two new rendering options, Mac LCD and Mac, which solves the condition beautifully!
Non-Linear History is usually a hidden feature that could be very helpful for iterating!
Today we released something called Asset Handoff that bridges the gap between design and development. We re excited to exhibit it for you.
If you don t trust Auto-Save, of the usb ports it reduces like it did in my opinion, create Keyboard Maestro to also hit S on other shortcuts you utilize regularly.
I have several common shortcuts achieving this, here it is with all the Return key by way of example:
I also provide it saving every 3 minutes, in the event!
I m sharing my only ULTIMATE PHOTOSHOP BRUSH that I use always for storyboard and doodling for FREE or any amount of donation/generosity are welcome too!. You will receive one brush file. This brush has an incredibly soft to dark pencil feel, I love it to utilize for non colored documents sketch and storyboard. Hope you want it!
Just needed to share some photoshop brush stuff. I hadn t seen this anywhere, so I thought I d post it. For those who don t love to read, there s a hyperlink to two brushes in the bottom:
I personally like painting with opacity set to pen pressure OFF and FLOW set to pen pressure most with the time. I like so it s more direct, which the color is either right or wrong and I figure it out quickly and never having to build opacity. The problem I had was utilizing flow set to pen pressure, the fall removed from opaque to transparent was too abrupt. I could adjust the flow percentage constantly, but I m lazy.
I finished up trying out utilizing a 50% grey texture, set to height driven by pen pressure, for getting a smoother transition. What finished up happening was that, rather then just finding a smoother transition between opaque and transparent, furthermore, it simulated bristles thinning out. The harder I press, the greater solid the stroke, the lighter I press, the harder scratchy. Surprise.
I attached an abr of two brushes, one with just the grey texture, and one with all the grey texture with noise applied for it. I ll post a condensed brush set soon, either that has a Gumroad tutorial, or possibly a new painting.
FYI through the standard photoshop brush, but works nice for that mixer brush if it s your personal style.
Also possibly a fresh layout! I m a little bit of testing and seeing what s the best approach to optimize everything.
Going and keep messing using this layout. It being centered messes beside me. But looks nice and you may tell individual posts easier.
Search function! Tagging on and on to try for the layout for the search bar so in case you want specific brushes for environment, character, lineart, artist and ect. I is going to be categorizing them
Slowly tagging everything.
Lately I ve been asked several times in regards to the pencil brush I started make use of months ago. Obviously It cannot be compared using a real pencil, however it is the closest brush I found that will do the trick.

These are a handful of previews of any Sims 4 hairstyle I m implementing. This could be the first hair mesh I ve tried doing in years, along with the very first time I ve attempted hair meshing in 3DSMax. It IS so greater than meshing only in MS3D the way it cuts Meshing time by the majority if not more turbosmooth is usually a lifesaver.
This ought to be done inside next week if all goes well, I still have to create the hat cuts and many types of the recolours, therefore we shall see. Plus I need to include a little extra piece inside top-center relating to the bangs. O.o
A few issues though, is always that I started making my planes with a great number of divides to begin with which totally exploded the poly count: Future hairstyles I create I are going to be less mean with all the polygons. D: Still fighting using the bleeding problems, but this hair isn't too bad as it s short.

I m probably gonna convert these for Sims4 in the bit. I m checking to discover if I can create an earring package file to compliment emissivebumpmapsSpeculars first. I m also taking care of a male earring set ATM for a lot of more standard/modern male jewelry that s much less fantasy based.
I designed a new circlet for Sims 4! The mesh/model and Textures are brand-new and made with scratch in MS3D and Photoshop by me. I have uploaded the file with an increase of information on my own LJ and also caused it to be available at MTS!
