I get the pre-installed original Windows Vista home basic with my DELL INSPIRON laptop. I have windows vista but I need to generate a new partition to setup windows xp. I used disk managment for making a new partition by shrinking a volume but all I got is unallocated space from the drive which I couldnt change it doesn't matter what I did.

If you right click for the unallocated space and hang it active and set a Windows XP CD inside the CD rom drive it is possible to install Windows XP.

Yes, I right clicked for the unallocated space though the only option I had is New Simple Valume and in some cases that option didnt work!!
I familiar with create partition and support drives with ease through Partition Magic and Norton Ghost 9 speculate both are not that will work with windows Vista I thought if I can generate a partiotion and install or windows 7 insted of erasing or formating the harddrive I will avoid wasting time but I suppose that is certainly not possible.

I did reach your goals in making a whole new partition using windows vista disk management and installed the windows xp for the new partition the good news is Partition Magic wouldnt work and my computer only boots from microsoft windows xp. I reinstalled the windows vista inside the other partition then again only windows vista is correct. I repaired the microsoft windows xp but the vista plus the Partition Magic wouldnt work!! My concern is that partition magic didnt work during window xp I guess as the partitions were created by vista.

Download Powermax here: After you download it you might have to generate a floppy or maybe a CD and boot for it. I always execute a full low level format and erase to zeros.Takes a while nevertheless it is the top I dont like permit Windows format my harddrive.
