OpenArena can be an open-source content package for Quake III Arena licensed beneath the GNU General Public License v2 GPLv2, effectively developing a free stand-alone game. You don't need Quake III Arena to try out this game.
OpenGL supported video card with 16MB of video memory. Voodoo Banshee, TNT and up
The game theoretically can operated with Pentium 100s which has a Voodoo2, but dont expect much performance over 20fps as well as the loading time for you to be under a minute.
For some infos about compatibility by GPUs, you might take a look to your VidCompat page.
Yes. Check this wiki site. In particular, there exists a section called Manual, look there.
This is really a wiki, in order to contribute to expand this web site! Everyone can! You can edit all pages and posts, even without registering a username! It exists also an optional in-game manual, you could install if you want: have a look to ManualIn-game help.
The TIGRS rating system, if it once existed in 2007, doesn't have any mature rating and has now nothing between teen and adult. Claims of the usb ports being adults only are pure misinformation. Its a greater portion of a 15 game. There isn't explicit nudity, no female nipples, with no sexual activity. This applies to your OA3 reboot too.
By default, the first Quake III Arena placed the configuration and autodownloaded files having a separate subfolder for every single mod under a installation folder even though set fshomepath path OS command line parameter allowed to work with a different folder. ioquake3 changed the default behavior, automatically by using a different folder per user on the machine, and OpenArena follows this.
For short, inside the documentation organic meat simply refer to this as folder your homepath folder.
Note: while fshomepath variable contains your homepath folder configuration and autodownload folder, fsbasepath variable contains your basepath folder your OpenArena installation folder, containing OA binaries.
Mod-specific subfolders within your homepath folder are also the place where your screenshots and demos are saved into apposite subfolders.
Continue reading these sections have a look at about homepath.
The exact location with the homepath folder differs from main system.
Hint: in the event the Library folder is invisible you are able to still reach it going on your home folder, then choosing menu item Go Go to Folder and entering Library from the field.
Windows: %APPDATA%OpenArena only use Run and copy it inside of Windows XP it produces in C:Documents and settingsusernameApplication dataOpenArena and under Windows Vista or Windows 7, to C:UsersusernameAppdataRoamingOpenArena.
Hint: %appdata% is simply an environment variable you can use as a shortcut to achieve the real folder. Application data WinXP or Appdata WinVista/7 folder is generally an hidden folder: you could possibly need to set Windows to indicate hidden folders, or to make use of the %appdata% shortcut, in order to succeed in it.
Note: main configuration file and several other configuration/log files are trapped in a separate subfolder per mod for instance, %APPDATA%OpenArenamissionpack for The Mission Pack, or %APPDATA%OpenArenabaseoa to the normal OpenArena. See also Manual/Using Mods.
Screenshots and demos are held in subfolders under each mods folder, automatically created as you desire.
Only 3 files is usually autodownloaded thus, no server configuration or mod help files and they'll be kept in subfolders from the following homepath folder:
For example, autodownloaded files related to your main game will be trapped in a subfolder called baseoa. There will be an outside folder per mod, much like for your configuration files to the mod. Notice that, whether or not playing which has a mod, it could possibly autodownload some files and also to baseoa folder, by way of example additional maps.
OpenArena quest for files within your installation and configuration folders, thus, should you desire, if the program is closed it is possible to manually move autodownloaded pk3s through the autodownload path for the same path within the installation directory, and have available to all of the users on the machine.
If you set about to autodownload folders, but abort the operation ESC key, then you'll find file which has the partially downloaded file example: you ought to be able to delete it quickly and easily, even without closing OpenArena. Even when you dont delete it, if it is going to be needed in future, its download will re-start on the beginning anyway download resuming just isn't supported.
Yes, you may specify a new homepath folder.
Start the action with set fshomepath PATH on the OS command line to decide on where the action may write files. Replace PATH using the location to save in. Please be sure your user offers write permissions for your chosen folder. An example, under Microsoft Windows, could possibly be set fshomepath c:testoaconf: in this particular example, your configuration file are going to be created as You cannot change fshomepath after starting this course, you should set it at launch.
Tip: you may create a shortcut that automatically launches the sport with that option at the end from the command line please reference your Operating System documentation, if you'd like help.
If you launch the action again minus the fshomepath parameter, it'll return to make use of default path again. In other words, you will need to make use of the command line option everytime because it isn't a permanent change: fshomepath will not be stored into file, and when you think about it for a short time, its perfectly logic, because this course cannot read before knowing whats its path. Thus, a personalized shortcut would then be appropriate.
You are able to use PATH .to keep in subfolders directly underneath the install directory like an original Quake III Arena did. This means that every one of the users on the computer will share exactly the same configuration and autodownloaded files, unless they've completely separate installation folders. The autodownloaded pk3 files will likely be put together with the initial and manually downloaded files. Usage: set fshomepath./.
See LinuxInstall page. Well, you could possibly just download the state run package, extract it somewhere and run the action, or get if from some Linux repository, or from Desura.
Use the port check its page on, or try to find it within BSD ports. OpenArena is accessible through the FreeBSD ports system at games/openarena. Configuration for things such as SMP support, SDL, OpenAL, choosing which binaries you need built along with other options is handled using an ncurses-based menu.
Note which the OpenArena binaries have different names under FreeBSD. The binaries were renamed from other IOQuake3-derived names so as to prevent conflicts with ports namely, games/ioquake3. The binaries are openarena to the base client, openarena-smp with the SMP client and openarenaded with the dedicated server.
The port uses the pak files from your Windows/Linux distribution, so there shouldnt be any problems playing online.
If you desire to try out OpenArena under FreeBSD without resorting to the port, you possibly can run the Linux OpenArena binaries using FreeBSDs Linux ABI. The information provided about it inside FreeBSD Handbook really should be sufficient to put in and run OA but heres a much more OA-specific walkthrough.
The first steps is the same than for Linux. First, grab the tarball and exract it :
However, if you try to operate it :
usr/games/openarena/ioquake3-smp.i386/usr/games/openarena/ioquake3-smp.i386: error while loading shared libraries: 0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
So you should get libSDL plus some other libs too. There are two methods to the. You can either copy them from a current Linux system or download the Debian or Ubuntu and other Linux distro packages on their behalf and extract the libraries files at their store. Alternatively, Ive place all of them online. Ive also written a shell script to automate the installation with the libs, when you want to utilize it, do :
Otherwise, it is possible to do it manually. Whatever the method you familiar with get the libs was, after you have your SO file, you have to copy it on the correct place, from the file hierarchy beneath the/compat/linux directory. For example, in Linux Debian Etch, the libSDL file can be found at 0.11.0 and 0 can be a symlink into it, and we all do :
sudo cp 0.11.0/compat/linux/usr/lib cd/compat/linux/usr/lib sudo ln - s 0.11.0 0
And precisely the same goes per other library OA asks for after you try to operate it. Optionnally, it is possible to make a symlink towards the game binary somewhere with your PATH, as an example :
sudo ln - s/usr/games/openarena/ioquake3-smp.i386/usr/local/bin/openarena
Since 0.7.6 you need to be able to pick any resolution your hardware supports. The information we have found for 0.7.1 and older.
Here rmode - 1 is short for custom settings, whereas the default value is dependent upon your system and stands for your performance level.
Alternatively, it is possible to type the following inside games console adapt your resolution :
The installation is nearly exactly like in Q3A. Simply copy 3 files on the map/model/etc in your OpenArena/baseoa/directory. Mods dont go below OpenArena/baseoa/: the doctor has to have their particular folder, like OpenArena/modname/. Anyway, you could potentially experience some compatibility problems: please read this sections.
Maps intended for Quake 3 and Team Arena should work. Their custom textures should appear much like under Q3, when they will look somewhat different where they used original Quake 3 textures which were replaced with free ones in OpenArena, that might be similar although not identical, for copyright reasons. Total Quake 3 texture replacement work isn't completed yet it is really a goal expected for OA 0.9.0, thus some textures will still be missing you'll see black and white squares instead; inside the meanwhile, they exist unofficial third-party q3a2oa texture compatibility packs not manufactured by the OA team that increase the amount of textures, some of those with nice quality and many with inferior just to n't have the monochrome squares. Some white and black squares are often caused by incompatible or missing shaders.
These maps would lack support for some on the extra game modes, on account of missing gametype-specific items Domination points for Domination mode. Anyway, it is possible to happily use them inside other gametypes.
You will find many maps suitable for Quake 3 and Team Arena on the internet: as an example, LvL - Q3A Custom Maps can be a big archive of these.
You will find Q3A2OA texture compatibility packs, searching the net that has a search engine. Please notice : these are third-party stuff therefore we are not involving them. Also notice that you might have already autodownloaded one of them if you connected to some server. Here there is certainly one, on your commodity:
Future OA versions hopefully 0.9.0 must not need such third-party texture fixes anymore.
Such packs will not be required to try out official OpenArena maps. It must be noticed that current OA version may currently have got replacements for just a few on the textures built into those packs, hence using those packs might result in a few OA textures appear somehow differently than they look such as clean OA differently colored blocks.
Mods require a subfolder at OpenArena/as opposed to Quake 3 Arena/.
Sometimes, mods add a Windows batch file to start out them rather than using the mods menu: within this case, you'll be able to modify the batch file to launch as an alternative to.
Too many CVARs, cannot produce a new one! errors-
If you feel a no sound in any way problem while by using a mod, examine to it.
Some mods include his or her in that case you could need a Q3A2OA texture compatibily pack, as mentioned within the Maps made for Quake 3 section above.
To be capable of successfully utilize a model it needs to come complete with all graphics, skin files and animations instead of depend on using Quake 3 Arena model resources. As a rough guide 3 model file over 1 Mb could be compliant. If it does comply then you'll probably employ a character it is possible to then access.
A simple skin created to fit around a baseq3 model, instead, might be shown if there is undoubtedly an OpenArena model using the right name, though the graphics could possibly be more or less all messed up.
Up to OpenArena 0.8.5, a difficulty comes with bots desiged for Quake 3. Often, player models include related bots, and chances are you'll be able to utilize a character model for yourself quickly and easily, but having many error messages in console like Weapon number beyond range or strange behaviors
like it not moving if this does not view you, or having it using only the machinegun without other weapon
if it is related bot enters the experience if you add it manually or it's automatically added by botminplayers feature. The problem is that Quake 3 bot files arent fully suitable for OpenArena around 0.8.5, therefore you should have a patch using this link for being placed with your baseoa folder to correct these errors. With this pk3, just about every error will likely be fixed, just one or two chat messages will result by having an error. If you might be using OA 0.8.8, instead, that fix is included, so you're able to happily use third-party bots created for Quake3 in 0.8.8, you no longer need 3 file: delete it, when you have it.
If a bot looks for a model name that isn't included in OpenArena, the default model SargeGrism will likely be used instead.
Attention, this project needs open content! Your contribution have to be public domain or GPLv2. Please have a look at the Developer FAQ to learn more about how to contribute.
PS: You may also help OpenArena by promoting it: act online, talk of computer with friends and family, add reviews and/or links with it on your site/blog. You will find some banners within the Artwork page. You can really help OpenArena!
They are usually direct conversions of files released under GNU GPL v2 by John Romero in October 2006. 1
Beware, itll require some beefy processor it to be playable though
In Debian based systems like Ubuntu and Freespire the openarena command might not tell you the version number. You may want to make this happen and observer the file name:
The integrated server browser see Manual/Multiplayer, currently does not incorporate a search friend feature. But this just isn't a big problem, as there are some external tools external server browsers that permit to look for a certain nickname or part from it, as an example a clan tag over the many active internet servers
those servers that happen to be published on master server, correctly running dedicated 2 mode
They are not the same aspects, but possess some relationships.
Framerate dependent physics, fixed framerate physics and accurate physics are not the same methods used by the experience to manage players positions, that affect gravity and movement. The server admin selects exactly what physics apply. Since OpenArena 0.8.5, accurate physics would be the default one. Please read Game physics page have a look at; TweakTweaking on-line parameters, and Manual/Graphic optionsFramerate are related, too.
Vanilla is often a term sometimes utilized to refer on the classic physics and control responses given by the standard game. CPM physics the name comes from a Q3 mod are modified physics rules and control responses furnished by some mods. See also Game physicsVanilla and CPM physics.
Nowadays you might have many approaches to communicate along with your friends together with own Clan all across the globe. You may schedule appointments and talk with them using email, IRC services for a lot of OA-dedicated IRC channels, see IRC, web chats, myspace, forums, instant messaging and/or VoIP Voice over IP softwares from ICQ to Skype or Paltalk, only to mention a couple of. And various external server browser tools allow to try to find a certain player name currently playing in a OA internet server.
Worldwide appointments suffer from different timezones, hence you might wish to consider dates using UTC Coordinated Universal Time or GMT Greenwich Mean Time : you may find a few UTC/GMT online time converters here and here, and also a World Meeting Planner that shows tables with times in countries you decide on, for that selected day here. Another World Clock has arrived, with Event Time Announcer feature here ideal for organizing events for instance FragFests and ClanWars. An alternative might be Swatch Internet Time a head unit that divides per day into 1000 slices called, without needing timezones: you are able to find it here.
You may also use third party VoIP software for instance Mumble, Roger Wilco or TeamSpeak to speak with the friends also while playing talking to all of your team-mates at the identical time, to coordinate your movements. OpenArena can also include a built-in VoIP feature see Manual/Voice chat, but do not forget that its availability depends from your server you're currently connected for it does not work outside OpenArena.
Of course, OA allows to deliver text chat messages whenever you are playing. By default, you are able to press t key, type your message colliding with ENTER key to transmit it. All people inside server will hear a beep and discover your text inside upper part with the screen for any short time in case you did not have access to enough time and energy to read a certain message, you might pull down command console for a time, and focus it again beyond this concept. It is also possible to transmit text messages on your team-mates the few messages would also mention your location inside map, if available: you need to bind a unique key with the feature, from SETUP- CONTROLS- MISC menu. Bots do only recognize orders that will from team chat, not from public chat. ESC menu has a team orders section with pre-defined team orders.
For informations about online play, you may refer to Manual/Multiplayer page. You could even create your own server, and password-protect it.
Enable automatic downloading by looking at Setup then Game Options and clicking to convert Automatic Downloading to on.
There are two possibilities: You will not run the identical version because server. This error should rarely happen with 0.7.7 or later.
Other possibility: Either you and the server has modified files inside the pk3 file.
You can try solving this by utilizing LordHavocs setgamma tool to reset the brightness to normalcy for Microsoft Windows. You will get it here
If you switch from fullscreen to windowed mode, brightness controls cease working in windowed mode while continue in fullscreen mode. If you start the overall game directly in windowed mode, brightess controls is fine until you exchange signal of fullscreen then to windowed mode again. Thus, the workaround is to switch the signal from windowed mode, then completely quit OpenArena and launch the overall game again: it'll start in windowed mode, with brightness controls working.
time with this writing: OpenArena 0.8.8
Maybe they already fixed some problems under Linux, but under Windows it can be still broken. Maybe you might ask them to explore it again, on ioquake3 Bugzilla or SDL Bugzilla.
Problem noticed using Linux. See fifth solution in case there is strange behavior on Windows. Seventh solution may work with both Windows and Linux. See also I cant research using my mouse section below.
1 First Solution: Make certain that you might have disabled your screen saver.
2 Second solution: If OA switches to windowed mode after some minutes of gameplay. Try to disable Compiz or any 3D environment in case you use one. see fourth solution
3 Third solution: If you cant get a mouse working correctly after OA switched to windowed mode for reasons yet unknown, seek to follow these steps:
mask the console, your mouse should work ;
4 Fourth Solution: when you find that Compiz causes the issue Write a script to disable Compiz, start OpenArena, then re-enable Compiz once OA is power down, to help you continue to have the cool effects with the rest of your session. To do so, open any text editor for instance gedit and type this:
bin/bash metacity - -replace cd/directory of installation/./openarena.i386 compiz - -replace
The above is merely an example, and may need being modified to match your configuration. Where is says directory of installation, type the path in the root of your Filesystem, to, and including, the openarena directory. For example:/home/mark/Documents/openarena-0.8.1/The line below may also ought to be modified IF you make use of a 64 bit system. If you do, the 2nd last line should read:./openarena.x8664
If you have a very 32 bit system, get forced out as:./openarena.i386
Save the document anywhere. It needs to be recognized like a shell script. If you use an os that supports running scripts as executables, for instance Ubuntu, simply right go through the file, click properties, go to your permissions tab, and look run as executable. Then all you will need to do runs the script, and OA will run such as the issue never existed inside first place. You can also produce a launcher for your script. Then all you should do, is select the launcher, and OA runs perfectly! ; Note: If you cannot set the file to operate as an executable, then you should run it in a very terminal. Slight performance increases are also noted with Compiz off.
5 Fifth solution: A mouse response problem may additionally occur on Windows, if your DPI dots per inch setting is modified to improve the font sizes. This causes the mouse to advance a LOT in a very weird direction every milimeter you carefully move it, so that it is totally unplayable. To change this under Windows XP, click start, then Run, type thus hitting enter alternatively, you are able to simply right-click in the empty area of your desktop then select properties, goto the settings tab, click advanced and hang the DPI to 96. You might ought to reboot with this to take effect. In Windows Vista and 7 you must go in your desktop, rightclick some empty space, click graphical options or preferences undecided, and click on the DPI setting within the left with the window. This should even be the default 96DPI.
6 Sixth solution: look at your settings in Setup - Controls - Look menu e.g free look, mouse speed, invert mouse options.
Sometimes you get inside game maybe after changing some video settings and experiece which you cannot look around together with the mouse anymore moving it only enables you to strafe a little: within this case, you may try pressing the ESC/ESCAPE factor to open the ESC menu and again to seal it. If that will not work, try pressing switches on mouse and keyboard jump, zoom, . Or you could use command console and enter /inrestart command.
You also can try your third solution above: something similar alt-tabbing away and after that returning to OpenArena may help you also with a Microsoft Windows environment.
Another thing: be sure you've free look option enabled in Setup - Controls - Look menu: if this is disabled, you will likely be able to work with the mouse to find information about and down only if pressing the mouse look key, too.
Possible seeing as there are no servers running for ones version. If you will find any servers listed here and also you do not see any within the server list from the game therefore you are with all the latest version with the game current version is 0.8.8, you could possibly need to configure certain firewall settings to permit OpenArena see also Manual/Multiplayer.
I enabled some additional detail settings within the console; some of those may not be available inside the menu:
rexttexturefilteranisotropic 4 - Enables anistropic filter. Its VERY noticable in the event you use high resolutions and examine detailed characters especially Kyonshi. Makes things way less blurry.
rflares 1 - Enables flares, which glow around maps light sources. Maps compiled with q3map2 with - flares can have flares just as maps compiled with q3map.
cgshadows 2 - Enables stencil shadows. rstencilBits should be set to 8 for it showing up properly.
rdetailTextures 1 - Enables detail texturing, which scatter maps etc adding a convincing texture effect to rid some in the filtering blur. This is generally enabled automatically, but for a few odd reason it's not necessary it set one, the choice is yours to 1.
Be warned these particular options demand a much beefier system which has a fourth-generation video card Geforce, Radeon to operate well.
some current settings in OpenArena can be incompatible along with your graphics card. Make a backup from the file and delete it inside your OpenArena folder.
when you are executing it under Windows, be sure not make use of Microsoft graphic drivers. Use drivers through your vendor. ATI NVIDIA
You need to put in the libraries for OpenALOpenAudio Language. In Debian/Ubuntu you are able to do this with all the command: sudo apt-get install libopenal0 else apt-get install libopenal0a. If there is certainly none of such libraries, use sudo apt-get install libopenal1, go on the command console and type salDriver
The walls and ceilings, by way of example, can be discoloured though the experience will still be playable. When this happens you could possibly also pointed out that distorted graphics will seep outside of OA and appear with your desktop.
If you already know why this occurs and/or possess a workaround please explain it here. Thanks!
Something similar to this walls were black, text was unreadable transpires with me. I solved it by turning Compiz off.
Response: You could try/vidrestart whether or not this happens. I have that sure to a key in the event that something goes awry.
This problem has become noticed with OpenArena 0.8.5 and Microsoft Windows XP, but more versions may be affected. It happens that, when you start OpenArena and then utilize Mods men
1 You entered an incorrect URL to your browsers address bar, or
2 You havent uploaded content.
2 The link you accustomed to get we have found faulty.
Its a great idea to allow the link owner know.

This guide will talk you from the setup of an Quake 3 server for LAN parties or Internet play. I will include specific instructions to create a Q3 Server on both Red Hat 6.2 and Windows NT 4.0. I acknowledge the fact Q3 will operate on several other Linux distributions at the same time as BEOS however for simplicity sake will simply cover RedHat 6.2 and NT. This document doesn't cover putting together Q3 Demo or Q3Test servers thought I may consider publishing demo instructions if requested.
This document is really a work in progress and are going to be updated every day until it can be robust enough to square on a unique. If you've got any questions do ask them at our Quake 3 admin forum. If you go to whichever mistakes or know any info that needs to be added here please you can post a communication under suggestions inside the forum.
Heads Up - This is where I will put whats new and then important info including patch release info.

Ok not being satisfied using the old forums I have upgraded to W-Agora and that is another freeware forum package but this place looks quite a lttle bit like UBB and contains most in the functions I have been seeking. You will notice how the latest threads links towards the right are missing due for the new forums I am going to ought to code some hooks in to the new baord with the latest thread feature. I hope eveyrone enjoys and uses the modern forums. You can now register also which means you dont must keep typing your info.
I stood a brainstorm yesterday and are already testing everything day. Because gets executed on every map change it has become challenging to set cvars on servers and have them to stick. The solution I have is easy. For Team Arena servers produce a blank as part of your missionpack dir and then work it to readonly. This allows so that it is executed on every map change however Quake 3 cant write going without running shoes and reset any cvars. If anyone finds problems with this please inform me as it continues to be working on my small servers for that last 10 hours.
A great deal of people have been covering not being capable of set their hostname or some other variables and have absolutely them stick in 1.27g. The problem is really a bug in 1.27g the place that the runs each and every time you change a guide. When it can it sets everything back to your settings which are saved the past time you ran the server, therefore discarding any changes made as part of your To solve this I happen to be making my changes to then starting the server, following your server starts go for the console and exec after which shutdown the server. This will find out all your seta commands on the so the very next time you start the server your entire settings will stick. However this means you must seta everything or inside case of items like capturelimit you will need to set it on the console when you shutdown the server. Hopefully this will probably be fixed quickly.
Took a long time this morning to update unique including the command list plus the Variables page to add in the 1.27g info too as the Team Arena stuff. Merry Christmas. I also whipped up a website that has the many Team Arena mapshots and map roations from it for reference that ought to help people recognize the various maps.
Ok due to TheRealTimbo at the Quake 3 World Forums I now take over my Linux server operational TA stuff. The problem was you should add set vmgame 1 for the command line to not utilize the dlls but instead utilize qvms. See ya there!!
We have the Linux binaries so lets get busy. I will develop updates when I get my server up on and on and have some matches of One Flag. UPDATE : Well I can get my server working fine however I havent been capable to connect to is just as I find the couldnt register james/red bug. If anyone knows a solution for this it would be nice to be capable of test my server out. I havent had any problems climbing on any other servers however everytime I get on one and view it out its a win32 server so I am undecided if its a linux patch problem or what.
Good News I received a message from Marty Stratton at id Software of course, if all goes well I should be capable to start getting some answers for your questions I havent been competent to answer over the very last year much like the mystery cvars and dmflags and so on.
id has released the server batch files which are accidentally left off on the TA CD. You can download them here. Usage from the batch files it merely to type the batch filename then exec and also the maplist you want to utilize.
On lack of of things I are already experiencing several zmalloc errors on mpterra2. The other two maps run flawlessly and 1 flag Terrain play simply rocks. If anyone includes a fix because of this let me know.
Last order will be the Linux binaries. Until the Linux binaries are let go us Linux sysops will just need to wait but that may give us the perfect time to upload that 350 mb pak file in our server I guess:
Ok its here and now you desire to create a Team Arena server. Problem is, id did not provide us yet again with clear and concise info for establishing a server. The dedicated server readme for TA states that they have got included batch files for your 4 different game types likewise as map rotation scripts for Large, small , terrain maps. Half correct the rest file for TA does offer the map rotation scripts but you'll find no batch files. I have however updated the gametype section to reflect the newest gametypes and I have added a compact section to command line to have TA servers operational.
I will be also working on adding in each of the info through the Quake 3 1.27g point release patch in the various pages though when you do see something I can have missed please go ahead and drop me a line as I want this document as complete as you possibly can. Got suggestions? Let me know
Ok the first few trouble for RA3 start to appear. One big is that you need to make sure you set con hunkmegs 56 about the command line or maybe your server will quit. I have keep reading several forums that this is just not true yet have never gotten a Linux or Win32 server to cycle every one of the maps without them set to 56.
Problem 2: Add gdowarmup 0 for your Other wise you'll have these double countdowns going and if your match starts it's going to kick you right back out.
Problem 3 : I cannot for your life of me shut down individual weapons through the in game admin. I am scanning over the dox right now and can post more on this blog later. I know its not really a password problem as I may change maps fine.
Problem 4: The in game browsers pings Lie like hell. My server returned a 600 ping personally but when I got for the server my ping would have been a happy 99. This is gonna deter players out of your server so allow them to all know the in game browser is just not to be trusted.
The long awaited Rocket Arena 3 is finally out and available and I would post up my notes on putting together the server. Linux folks should copy the file to their quake 3 directory after which use tar-xzvf to unzip it. It will produce the arena dir and subdirs since it extracts the files. Then all you'll want to do is unzip the in the arena dir and edit the config files. If anyone has any tips or questions post at the Q3A Forum and I will make an effort to answer all of them.
I also have several requests to include a section that included how you can set up mods. It would be quite impossible to me to employ a fully comprehensive mod guide that covered your entire install of mods but this certainly will get you around the right track.
At a couple of users request I have added a piece on IP Banning for obnoxious players.
Remote Console or Rcon is usually a way to allow for you to do most server administration task while connected and playing on your own server starting from inside Quake 3 itself. I have added this section because of quite some requests from people sending me e-mail.
Just minutes as soon as the release on the final Point release I mirrored all files and am now hard at work updating everything to include the many new stuff so look. Here are some brief Linux install instructions I have also updated the Variables page also.
Just a communication to linux server operators who will be putting custom maps on for autodownloading. The current Linux server binary doesnt check for your file inside basepath, but within the cdpath. That this means is downloads attempt to come from HOME/.q3a/baseq3/and may fail your client ends up having a zero byte file. To fix this for the moment, you are able to force basepath like this on the server:
q3ded set fsbasepath/bin/pwd exec
Where/bin/pwd will expand for the current directory that you are running the server from. You also can explicitly state the way there should you want.
This can certainly make autodownloading be effective on Linux servers. In a future version, well make sure the server checks both base and cdpath.
I spent some time this morning tinkering with the autodownload. On the Linux server you'll be able to put the maps inside the HOME/.q3a/baseq3/dir and also the server will run the maps fine so I am uncertain where zoids note above really matters in addition to having your maps in an independent place. The autodownload rates are based off your maxrate so on the lan it requires 10 minutes to get a 2.5 meg file that is insane. I wrote Robert Duffy to determine if this was correct or if there were something I really should be changing here. This would generate a 2.5 meg map a 20 minute download more than a 33.6 modem which just about makes autodownload worthless except on small maps. Even when setting maxrate to 30000 you will need around 4 minutes. Over a 100mb link thats still not too promising.
I just realized that I hadnt put a url to my variable list I happen to be working on. Here can be a list with the useful variables for Quake 3 server. Please go ahead and e-mail me anything I might have missed and share the information.
I have added the fast links to news and also the latest 5 forum posts on the right from the guide here therefore you dont miss any groovy things much like the latest UT Patch release or possibly a smoking hot thread around the forum you just eventually know everything about or planned to know more.
possible team uneven measures? such as L-Fire CTF Prevent team join, prevent capture, prevent flag pickup
fixed botminplayers, kept loading bots during intermission because
gteamAutoJoin default off, sets it so players automatically join a team on connect
gteamForceBalance default off, forces it so that this spread between number of players with a team isn't more than two. Player is going to be disallowed to participate a team with 2 or more players compared to the other.
added callvote nextmap, and display available callvote commands if usage is incorrect
added the opportunity to set gpassword to none meaning no password. This makes/rcon gpassword none work
Add gdoWarmup allowing warmup countdown timer on all game modes. This helps outside in clan matches, given that they can do a restart and obtain a fair countdown rather than random map restart that may be abruptive. This also gives individuals with slow load times a good chance
