I love dealing with him, Cash says of Levanthal, her husband. Its the ultimate romance if you ask me.
Watch the singer perform her song A Feathers Not A Bird at Nashvilles Ryman Auditorium.
Making new sounds while staying conscious of the past is a very common theme within the Fresh Air music critics year-end list.
From solo acoustic sketches to orchestral arrangements, the season had great roots music for all.
Cash gives a prolonged performance that boasts songs from The List and The River The Thread.
Listen to new songs performed around the World Cafe Live stage, inspired using a series of journeys she and husband John Leventhal took through Johnny Cashs South.
The River the Thread, Cashs first album in eight years, began that has a visit to her fathers boyhood home, and continued through landmarks great and small. The things you stop the hardest when you are young, you find yourself embracing when you're getting older, she says.
Two products have come together for Cash nowadays: her deepening comprehension of her devote her father Johnny Cashs legacy, and her want to only make albums that expand on the theme.
Ken Tucker says The River The Thread is really a travelogue; an ageless work of comfort and quiet joy.
Each song on Cashs new album is rooted inside the Southern soil connecting her familys old homestead in Arkansas to its ancestral Virginia homeland, expanding to survey its artistic roots in Alabama and Tennessee. Some narratives are fictional, while some mine family lore.
Also an author, Rosanne Cash is working using a non-fiction book. She has previously written Bodies of Water as well as a childrens book, Penelope Jane: A Fairys Tale.
When Rosanne Cash was 18, her father you might have heard of him; some phone him the Man in Black presented her using a gift: a listing of 100 essential country songs, chosen that can help the budding singer-songwriter get connected to and better be aware of the music that came before her.
She was far more concerned on writing her songs compared to interpreting the songs of others, and he or she succeeded in succeeding as known being a songwriter. Rosanne Cash recorded several No. 1 country hits, then left Nashville and established herself like a singer-songwriter inside indie-rock world.
After keeping that list for the last few decades, Cash thought we would turn her fathers gift to a singularly personal new album в titled, needlessly to say, The List.
The 12-track disc, the younger Cashs first recording composed entirely of other writers songs, collects her interpretations of titles from her fathers list. Among the artists whove joined her for featured tracks are Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello and Rufus Wainwright.
So how did her father arrive at prepare a list on her?
When I was 18 yrs old, I went around the road with my pops after I graduated from high school graduation. And we were riding around the tour bus eventually, type of rolling over the South, and hubby mentioned a song, Cash says. We started speaking about songs, anf the husband mentioned one, and I said I do not know that one. And he mentioned another. I said, I are unsure that one either, Dad, and hubby became very alarmed that I didnt know very well what he considered my very own musical genealogy. So he spent all of those other afternoon building a list for me personally, at the end for the day, he was quoted saying, This is your education. And over the top on the page, he wrote 100 Essential Country Songs.
Despite his or her own label, Johnny Cash didnt limit his choices which has a strict specification of country music.
The list has been better titled 100 Essential American Songs, given it was very comprehensive. He covered every critical part of Southern and American music: early folk songs, protest songs, Delta blues, Southern gospel, early country music, Appalachian. Everything that fed into modern country music was on that list.
Cash is primarily referred to as a singer-songwriter; she performs her very own songs, instead of typically covers. How did she feel about recording an album of other bands songs?
It would have been a little scary in the beginning, because I didnt ever would like to put my voice front and center. You know, I was obviously a songwriter; that's the torch I carried. This can be an honorable profession. This is what I do. Im a songwriter, she says. My voice just serves what Im authoring. So to let that go, I mean, bring the sensibilities of computer actually on the song choices, but to only be the interpreter was incredibly liberating, really fun.
Cash says there is often a legacy to preserve в and it also isnt just her fathers.
You know, people that werent around to know Patsy Cline s version of Shes Got You, or possibly a song like Take These Chains, or never heard Ray Charles Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music or Hank Snow or all of these people. So, I always felt like, you cant think about the Scots or even the Irish without Celtic music, she says. You cant imagine us, the Americans, without these songs. They are critical to us. You know, it may be a tragedy should they were just, you realize, you'd to в when they were just in the museum, or should they were just archived somewhere; whenever they werent still being performed.

Screwed FOREVER Artist List Is Your Favorite Artist On It?
To those who have followed the background music industry, referring as no real shock to learn that artists with major labels have very lopsided contracts where most of them get a few pennies for any dollar major labels collect. Often they should fight even for those few pennies. A few years back Congress changed copyright law to ensure that these long-suffering artists can reclaim ownership of these works after 35 years. Thats a very long time to suffer, but at the least theres some respite.
Beginning in 2013, rights of certain songs can revert for the original artist, meaning theyll get all future royalties instead with the record label they originally signed with. The one big exception is actually the song is usually a work for hire - commissioned by an organization rather than the independent work of some other party. This is definitely an overly simplified explanation but hopefully you receive the point. Sadly for artists, record labels have fraudulently declared many songs as works best for hire allowing labels to keep ownership. Artists with this category will probably be screwed forever.
For technical legal reasons that is at issue inside the upcoming MP3tunes trial, but you will discover implications for ALL artists. If this incorrect designation strengthens, then these artists won't get ownership and also the future royalties that comes as well as it. In the MP3tunes case we now have chance to have a ruling these works are NOT is employed by hire, paving the way in which for these actively works to be returned towards the artist and not using a multi-year battle that will likely cost millions since MP3tunes has gone through high of this.
What Im seeking is an artist that has the courage to face up on this matter and claim their works, laying the groundwork on their behalf and ALL artists who share their plight to consider ownership from the near future and escape this slavery. Rather like Curt Flood did battling for getting free agency for baseball players: See The Curious Case of Curt Flood that ought to have been referred to as the Courage Case of Curt Flood.
Below is usually a list of artists that EMI is intending to claim perpetual licenses in their works. It is not a complete number of artists which might be screwed forever which are only artists signed to EMI. Other labels have engaged within the same unscrupulous behavior. If you know all of these artists or managers or legal representation, please pass around my contact info or send me their contact info and Ill follow up with him or her:, 858-344-6911. Im searching for a couple artists will to supply evidence on the court within this important issue. Thanks for your help!
