The drives blue power light was lit, using the yellow access light CONSTANTLY blinking but nothing accessing the drive. The real clue to failure was only plugging it in with all the external strength, with no usb connection - constantly blinking yellow light normally, the flashing yellow light is out after about 10, 15 seconds.
On the plus side, HP support did respond in a hour, though it turned out obvious they'd not read my FULL explanation of troubleshooting, failed into two different computers, another identical drive worked both in.
So their 1st response was worthless, with regards to re-installing usb drivers, having a different usb port, etc., etc.
After I again stated my troubleshooting and conclusion, they agreed the disk had failed, and quickly offered a REPLACEMENT drive. Read more

The HP Personal Media 500 GB External Hard Drive is excellent. It works fine whether it really is inserted in to the Personal Media Drive Bay on my small HP Media Center computer's desktop, attached with a USB 2.0 port on that same computer, attached with a USB 2.0 port in my Toshiba Pentium 4 portable computers, or linked to my wifes Dell Pentium 4 pc. All three computers are running Windows XP with SP2. When attached into a regular USB 2.0 port, you do have to power the drive through the included AC adapter with power cord.
Unfortunately, I have had major difficulties using the Roxio Backup MyPC 7 software that comes loaded with this external hard disk. In particular, the instructions contained from the external disk drive User Guide that relate to installing the backup software on your own PC are ambiguous or totally incorrect. I found which you have to use experimentation to determine how to set up the backup software. I was able to set up the software successfully on my own HP computer by double clicking setup inside folder titled PMD. This took me with a screen that allowed me to fit on my computer the Backup MyPC software as well as Users Guide. The software worked fine in burning the Drive C because of this computer to your HP 500 GB external harddrive. On my Toshiba laptop, it appeared that I was able to fit the backup software applying the same procedures. However, when I aimed to use the installed software to support some files to your external hard disk, a Product Registration screen emerged that said how the backup software had been registered, though the screen wouldn't normally let me cancel the registration, register the software program again, take away the registration screen, or perhaps access the backup program.
