The initial step to working together with an image in Silver Efex Pro is needless to say to open that image in Silver Efex Pro. And because Silver Efex Pro is not just a stand-alone application, this means youre planning to involve another application, tons application, where youll find the image you want to assist and send it to Silver Efex Pro. I utilize Adobe Photoshop Lightroom to control my images and thus I use Lightroom since the host application for Silver Efex Pro.
You may, though, utilize Photoshop or Adobe Bridge as the host application for Silver Efex Pro and the other applications inside the Nik Collection. If youre using Photoshop because your host application, you are able to first open a picture, and after that choose Filter Nik Collection Silver Efex Pro 2 in the menu. That will launch Silver Efex Pro together with your image active. If youre managing your images with Adobe Bridge, you'll be able to select a perception and then choose Tools Nik Collection Silver Efex Pro 2 through the menu.
And throughout Lightroom the operation is very similar. Ill select a photo that I need to process with Silver Efex Pro, and from the Photo menu, Ill choose Edit In accompanied by Silver Efex Pro 2. When I choose that menu command, Ill be asked if I would like to edit a duplicate with my Lightroom adjustments intact. And thats the possibility I utilize. I may have applied basic adjustments in Lightrooms develop module before Im wanting to work while using image in Silver Efex Pro, and I certainly want those alterations in be applied. I could also choose to edit a duplicate of the original and will cause the Lightroom modifications to not be visible and I may edit the initial provided that original is not only a RAW capture.
But again, therefore, the Lightroom adjustments will 't be visible. So, I always makes use of the Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments option. We may also adjust the settings for your duplicate file. Ill do not delay- expand the Copy File Options section. And you'll be able to see that I can specify the File Format, I can select from TIFF, PSD, and JPEG. I may choose the Color Space, the Bit Depth and also the Resolution, along with, from the case of an TIFF file, the Compression to be used. Ill do not delay- leave these values at their defaults after which Ill please click the Edit button in order to open up this image with Silver Efex Pro.
Once Ive applied any adjustments Id like within Silver Efex Pro, I can click Save to finish processing of this image. And inside a case of Lightroom, youll note that I then provide an additional image during my catalog, the non colored documents version on the color original. And youll also recognize that the grayscale version of the whole picture is inside a stack with all the original. You can observe that theres a two on the picture. If I mouse over, what this means is one of two. And if I mouse above the other image, youll note that it indicates 2 of two, but there are 2 images inside stack.
And so I can view the images right near to each other, essentially grouped together, so I always understand that theres multiple version of the image. In Photoshop, principle process would be much the same. We would simply have a processed image within Photoshop. And if youre using Bridge, Photoshop is technically the host application and for that reason similarly you should end up with that non colored documents interpretation of the look within Photoshop itself. But needless to say, opening a picture in Silver Efex Pro is simply the beginning. Once you have a graphic opened in Silver Efex Pro, you may, certainly, adjust that image using a wide variety of options to help to improve the final image.

You can convert colour photos to monochrome in Photoshop and Lightroom or maybe your Raw conversion software usually chosen. But the previous few years have also seen an increase within the number of plug-ins created to do nothing else, besides convert photos to monochrome.
Today I m planning to look at what many individuals consider for being the best grayscale plug-in around Nik Software s Silver Efex Pro 2. Rather than give a comprehensive review in the software, I m planning to look at some on the things you are able to do along with it that it is possible to t or could well be much more difficult in Photoshop or Lightroom.
Silver Efex Pro 2 has 38 presets that you may use as starting points on your processing work, including vintage looks and also modern ones. This places the plug-in prior to Photoshop, and probably before Lightroom too. You can buy Develop Presets for Lightroom, however it will be hard to come by some giving you several options as those involved with Silver Efex Pro 2.
Here s a sample of some in the presets. The original colour photo is shown top left.
The full pair of Contrast and Structure sliders in Silver Efex Pro 2.
One from the elements that makes grayscale photos so effective is texture. You can enhance texture in the Photoshop and Lightroom the Contrast and Clarity sliders are my favourite tools just for this but Silver Efex Pro 2 takes it several steps further.
Silver Efex Pro 2 has four sliders for adjusting contrast. The Contrast slider would be the same since the one in Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw. The Amplify Whites and Amplify Blacks sliders permit you to increase Contrast inside highlights and shadows respectively. There s fashionable Soft Contrast slider that increases contrast but in a very less aggressive way, almost as if you find an overlay of gaussian blur. This slider is quite useful for portraits.
If you receive carried away with all the Contrast sliders you are able to lose detail from the highlights and shadows. So, beyond the four sliders stated previously, there are 2 Tonality Protection sliders familiar with bring back detail in clipped areas.
These portraits show the gap between Contrast and Soft Contrast. Soft Contrast is great for portraits, while Contrast is much better for subjects like architecture along with the landscape.
Structure slider resembles Clarity in Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw. But when it's in those programs the Clarity slider affects every one of the tones inside selected area, in Silver Efex Pro 2 it is possible to choose to adjust Structure independently inside shadows, midtones and highlights. There is another Fine Structure slider to improve mid-tone contrast in elements of fine detail.
The above photo shows three close-ups with the same portrait used earlier.
Top: A neutral grayscale conversion, without the need of increase in Clarity.
Middle: This is what occurs when you increase Clarity to 100% in Lightroom be aware that you wouldn t normally push it that far for just a portrait, I did it here tell you the effect. Clarity is increased uniformly over the frame, affecting your skin layer tones as well as being the hair.
Bottom: Shadows Structure set to 100% in Silver Efex Pro 2. Only the shadows may take a hit, leaving the midtones and highlights alone. This presented the detail within the model s hair and eyes, but left her skin untouched. You would have to employ a selection or maybe a mask in Photoshop or even the Adjustment Brush in Lightroom to obtain the same effect.
Just during Photoshop and Lightroom it is possible to apply adjustments locally along with globally, by using a system called Control Points.
A Control Point would be the centre of an circle within which you are able to make tonal adjustments. The adjustment is applied to tones similar in brightness and colour on the pixels under the Control Point itself. For example, should you place a Control Point spanning a dark tone, then enhance the brightness, merely the dark tones inside the circle are adjusted. Light tones remain untouched.
The yellow and black dot marks the Control Point. Adjustments are designed to pixels matching colour and brightness with the pixels underneath it. There are seven sliders you may adjust: Brightness Br, Contrast Co, Structure St, Amplify Whites AW, Amplify Blacks AB, Fine Structure FS and Selective Colorization SC.
It may seem complicated however it only needs a little practice to know how it works. You can use numerous Control Points as you wish in a photo, and group them together to protect areas that don t conform easily to your circular shape.
Selective colouring would be the technique of converting a photo to monochrome while leaving part of it in colour. This is easy with Silver Efex Pro 2 as all you should do is place a Control Point on the area where you need to retain colour.
I used two Control Points inside the following example, one on each coloured shutter:
Silver Efex Pro 2 has the most beneficial History panel I ve observed in any software. Every adjustment you're making to your photo is listed.
The History panel works together with all the Compare view. The yellow tab about the left indicates the photo used by the Before view, along with the entry used by the After view is displayed in yellow text. This simple method allows you to compare any two entries inside History panel.
Silver Efex Pro 2 can instruct you the location where the tones within your photo fall from the eleven zones from the Zone System. One useful using this is that you may use it include areas within your photo may block up on the web because they are darker and uneven or too light.
This screenshot shows the tones which fit in zone 3. They are indicated by the brown diagonal lines.
The Film Types panel will give you a choice of 18 different white and black films. When you choose one the plug-in emulates the tonality and grain structure on the selected film. It s a good way to get the film look without needing to shoot, develop, and scan monochrome film.
Silver Efex Pro 2 is area of the Nik Collection, including seven applications and charges 149. That works in the market to less than 25 a plug-in.
Note: If you re within a strict budget, the standalone version of OnOne Software s Perfect Photo Suite 8 represents a lot better value at 79. Click the link to find out more.
What software would you use for grayscale conversions? Do you prefer Photoshop, Lightroom, another Raw conversion program or perhaps a plug-in? Let us know inside comments what can you recommend with readers?

I have discovered TopazLabs B W Effects being a solid tool for conversion, and in some cases less expensive than OnOne for the people really price conscious.
I own both SFx and TL, and have a tendency to do more conversion are employed in TL tool due for the results I can obtain.

Topaz Labs B W Effects 2 is an additional great plug-in. A nice feature will be the presets that emulate old processes for example cyanotypes and platinum prints.
Great post! Helped me to higher understand the outcomes of those sliders I ve been pushing around in the bit of any trial-and-error approach.
blog/Andrew S. Gibson
Great tutorial, many thanks sharing. NIK has grown to be my head to for B W conversation. I used LR for the long time and also got very good results with it then one chose to do two in the same file, the second with NIK. No contest!
blog/Andrew S. Gibson
You re welcome. You re right, that s the most effective way to compare two programs. I m normally happier with files converted in Silver Efex Pro 2.
Great article and showcase with the SilverEfex features. I ve been using it mainly for all my non colored documents for about 12 months and love the capabilities. I suggested a write-up on this after looking at one of Tim Gilbreath s posts 2-3 weeks ago congratulations!
In a practical way I see no or not many results which could t be exercised with just Lightroom.
One in the things I like about Siver Efex Pro is that it provides extensive very nice presets. It s great for being able to quickly check out different presets and after that when I choose one that works well I can tweak the sliders to acquire exactly the issue I want.
blog/Andrew S. Gibson
The effects with the Structure and Soft Contrast sliders can t be replicated in Lightroom, for just one. The best way to see in the event you are interested would be to download the trial and see should you like it.
blog/Andrew S. Gibson
Yes, the presets are fantastic. You could also make your own which often can save you time processing photos.
blog/Andrew S. Gibson
I m can not do the selective colouring. For example, I have a BW shot RAW opened and converted in Elements, and I desire to retain the colour of the piece of jewellery from the shot. So I start Efex within Elements.
When I click on the control point for the jewellery, I only get Br, Co and St not another ones within the illustration inside the article.
The manual doesn t help I find it very hard to be aware of.
Does anyone please get thoughts on what I m doing wrong?
blog/Andrew S. Gibson
There s a little black arrow within the three sliders you re seeing. Click on that as well as the other three sliders will be. The one at the end Sc is usually the one you need.
There s another slider at the very top that controls the size from the Control Point. You may need to adjust that particular as well to find the required effect.
Hope which helps, contact us how you have on.
Thanks to the prompt response. I had found the little black arrow hence the edited post.
I l try the other recommendation not today, I should work! and enable you to know how I can get on.
Can you explain the visible difference between Structuresoft contrast and LR s clarity?
blog/Andrew S. Gibson
Structure is just like Clarity, with the exception that Silver Efex Pro 2 will give you a lot more control. There are four Structure sliders, helping you to apply it towards the highlights, shadows or midtones and also a Fine Structure slider for emphasising depth.
Soft contrast is similar to contrast but less aggressive. It s less harsh on skin discoloration and great for portraits.
Hope which helps. There are some examples within the article.
I ve become overwhelmed with software and software plugin choices. I own, Topaz Labs, Nix Collections, OnOne, one more or two small programs, various actions, also, to LR5 and PSCC. Whew!!! I ve seen what Silver Efex Pro is capable of doing and that s why I bought the main Nix Collection. The LR presets tend not to compare to any on the aforementioned programs. I use LR at the start and at the final of photo processing. PS is a lot over my head, even with using it for 5 years, but I put it to use to finish what Topaz, Nix or OnOne plugins start. And, usually turn out doing some small adjustments in LR, after things are all said and done for example dodging and burning and adding a vignette.
Thanks due to this informative article! I am pleased with Silver Efex Pro in addition to Color Efex.
So, that which you re saying may be the LR beats all after all? I ve become overwhelmed because there are many editing programs out there likewise but I only own LR for the time being, it s type of scary to uncover how many editing software are inside market that I don t even dare to examine the articles anymore.
I m seeking opinion on Silver Efex Pro which I have vs. Silver Efex Pro 2 its successor.

While there are numerous ways to create white and black digital photographs today, Nik software s Silver Efex Pro 2 sticks out as my preferred approach to creating Rich and beautiful non colored documents images within the digital darkroom.
I spent ages in real darkrooms back at first of my career in photography. I think that having that background allows me to possess a deeper appreciation with the items is possible regarding digital images today over a computer. We are living in a very golden chronilogical age of photography in which the possibilities for creating incredible images is near limitless.
While programs like Lightroom, Aperture, and Photoshop are usually capable of creating excellent black-and-white images, SilverEfex Pro 2 offers incredible diversity together with simplicity to the user. Anyone who is serious about monochrome photography has to try this excellent plug-in.
Luckily, there is usually a 15 day free trial offer of the application that allows someone to test the complete version without the need of limitations.
This software is usually as intricate or as simple as you'd like it to get, turning it into a solid selection for both amateur and professional photographers.
Some of my favourite features in the software include the possibility to emulate varieties of film, adding filters, total power over film grain, controlling image structure, one-click toning, and Nik sU Point Technology. While I m using Silver Efex Pro 2 to be a Photoshop plug-in, you may also use it to be a stand alone product maybe in Lightroom and Aperture.
While you have a somewhat passable result inside the neutral, there isn't any one button strategy to creating a striking non colored documents image. The quick and straightforward way should be to test some with the presets. If you want a quick conversion then one on the dozens of presets may be all you may need to use. If however, you're more like me, then applying one in the presets can be a good starting point before fine tuning the image using the robust adjustment tools for your use.
Each preset contains adjustments in brightness, contrast, structure, tone, film grain, plus more. The serious photographer will use some of these presets like a starting point but will desire to edit and fine tune the whole picture more specifically to his / her needs.
As because of so many other image editing plug-ins along with in Photoshop itself about to the extreme possibilities can bring about destructive results for your image. Knowing ought to stop is one from the keys of producing high-quality digital photographs. The controls in SilverEfex Pro 2 can be extremely in-depth yet not so difficult to use.
In this panel you control the common brightness and contrast within the style. Two excellent features with this panel our dynamic brightness and soft contrast.
With the dynamic brightness slider Silver Efex Pro 2does some on the thinking to suit your needs. The unique algorithms within the software program assesses different areas of your respective image and takes that information under consideration to give you a significantly smoother blending of overall brightness.
The soft contrast slider will intelligently measure the overall contrast within your image and let you for making subtle yet striking changes towards the photograph that you are working on. You really need to play with this slider as a way to fully appreciate what you'll be able to do for you personally. It is usually a great addition for the plug-in.
Structure is certainly one of my favorite regions of this software. Partly a sharpening tool, partly a depth tool; structure adds that extra amount of oomph with a photograph that can it for the next level when it comes to image detail.
I love this feature. Control points allow someone to selectively manipulate global adjustments in specific areas of one's image. You can add several control points as you want to the whole picture you are editing and control the dimensions of each one individually. The top slider could be the size slider which controls the region that you would like to adjust. The adjustment area is represented by the circle you see inside photo above. Dragging the slider everywhere you look allows someone to increase and decrease how big is each control. Below that slider will be the enhancement sliders giving you full treatments for global adjustments in every individual control point.
With pinpoint precision you'll be able to adjust many methods from brightness, contrast, structure, and also add color to specific parts of your respective image. The selective adjustment control point tool is often a very powerful feature yet amazingly easy make use of.
Back whenever we were all still using film cameras, it had been customary make use of coloured filters on our lenses as a way to achieve certain books to the black-and-white images. The same effects can now be made in Silver Efex Pro 2 with all the colour filter palette. In fact you could have far more control now than previously since it is possible to manipulate these filters from 0 to 200% intensity in addition to select any color from the spectrum utilizing the hue slider to select any colour you may want.
Once again starting while using presets is often a good beginning but certainly not only a one-button solution. Carefully selecting hue and strength allows someone to have incredible control above the colour filter tool. In the thumbnails above you will observe how each filter reacts to some vividly colourful photograph at 100% intensity. Using the color filters jointly with global adjustments, selective control points, film grain, and toning allow that you make stunning black-and-white or monochromatic images.
Like so many with the other features in Silver Efex Pro 2, the grain engine is exceedingly versatile and delivers near unlimited possibilities regarding grain structure within your non colored documents images. When are familiar with shoot with film I was a huge fan of high grain films from Kodak, Fuji, and Ilford. Today I gravitate additional towards hi-d low grain images. There still is usually a place for grain in photography though, especially in non colored documents photographs. With precision control with the grain engine it offers never been easier to produce beautiful high grain non colored documents digital photos.
I ve always been a huge fan of sepia and selenium toning of non colored documents photographs but I sure never enjoyed the horrible chemical smells especially when working together with sepia toners in the traditional darkroom. This is just one other reason why I love implementing digital imaging gives me much more versatility and is also far better for that environment at the same time. Like one other tools in Silver Efex pro 2 the toning tools are very extensive.
You will use any from the 24 different presets for toning your images or build your own unique tones and save those as presets likewise.
Creating custom vignettes has never been simpler. Using the vignette and burnt edges tool allows that you darken or lighten the edges of one's photo with good accuracy. Once again you'll be able to start with certainly one of several presets and optimize the results quite nicely with all the different adjustment sliders.
This is one with the only parts on the software that I find lacking. Image borders are tricky and as well very subjective in terms how people judge them. Is a border really necessary? I d point out that in 100% of business professional photography applications the answer will be no. They just risk looking tacky. While I do such as the use of image borders in iPhone or Android photography, those are merely fun and playful options for sharing snapshots. If your professional images have to have a fancy border to be good, it s not implying much around the images.
These borders are customizable into a degree. There are several standard presets that it is possible to fine tunebut you may t save your valuable favourites as custom presets. Even if I doubt that I ll utilize this feature much, the borders are relatively done well and certainly fitting in style to be used along with white and black photography. There is room for improvement here though.
Silver Efex Pro 2 allows you to make use of any of its already established presets but you could also create your personal. Once you achieve a comprehensive look that you just enjoy, clicking the Add Preset button in the bottom left of your respective screen will allow you to definitely save and name your custom presets. Now with one click you'll be able to re-design your favourite overall looks on any new image that you're working on.
Creating and naming your own personal custom presets with the selective tools can be quite a great time saver for future projects.
If when that you are reading this review you are feeling like I m not finding anything wrong together with the Silver Efex Pro 2, you re in close proximity to being correct. While I don t perform lot of grayscale work anymore, when I do, this can be my visit software.
Nik s intelligent dynamic brightness, fine structure, and soft contrast sliders
Compatibility with Photoshop, Lightroom, and Aperture
a. Go to your History browser.
b. Click Compare once, it will have the History State Selector turn up this may look like an odd UI, but if we always displayed a history state selector within the single image view mode, everyone that tested the software program got really confused considering that the control didn t a single thing. It s always visible inside side-by-side and split-view modes.
c. Drag the History State Selector to Original Image
d. Press and secure the Compare button
Nik Software offers some excellent tools for digital photographers andSilver Efex Pro 2 for me is their flagship plug-in. Not only does it work effectively and offer top quality results that top photographers worldwide are using nevertheless it is a large amount of fun to use. I usually do not say that about most software I use for work.
I ve been wanting to share with you my Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 reviewfor sometime but I kew it'd take some time to cover every one of the features properly. This is often a powerful and robust little bit of software directed at professional photographers and proficient amateurs. If you re seeking to take your white and black photography for the next level, then whole process almost is exactly what we are looking for. Try the whole product without having limitations for 15 days to find out if it s right for you personally.
Nik Software even offers several methods to learn tips on how to use a few more efficiently. They offer webinars hosted by top professional photographers, at the moment video tutorials, and also a blog brimming with valuable tips and hints. All of this material is obtainable for free.
Hi Ken nice review; very complete.
One comment re: your Cons : you possibly can see the first color image w/in Silver Efex Pro 2. You ought to choose either the split preview or side-by-side preview, then click within the History button and judge original image through the edit list.
However, I d want to see a simple solution due to this. Adding an added button to View Original can be a welcome feature to Silver Efex Pro 2.
I love Silver Effex Pro but happen to be extremely often unwilling to buy the latest version since Google acquired Nik.
My guess is support for Nik plugins almost certainly won t go far. Time will inform.
Why would google wish to support a photography plugin. The got the things they wanted that was snapseed. I don t trust Google period.
That being said, I have tried OnOne yet still love the astounding control points of Silver Effex.
Matt, Google wouldn't purchase Nik just by Snapseed. I have that on excellent authority. Snapseed is really a quality product for mobile and casual photo users however the rest products Nik offers is top quality professional editing software.
Google can be a HUGE supporter on the photo community. Just see what you do on Google and I think your fears will disappear.:
I totally love SilverEfex Pro 2, it s 100x superior to the 1st version. NIK is really a AWESOME company who responds quickly to clients and gives fantastic customer satisfaction. I take advantage of this software the many time for just a lot of my work.
For the subsequent version, let them know to make the control point borders mould to different shapes or work like a quick-selection tool. Round doesn t always work with me.
Great review I ve tried this product and would like to have it, however the cost versus onOne s Suite was excessive! I ll make an effort to win it!
Sure they re nice to photogs on G now but my guess would it be s for them to get numerous pro photos on the and one day customize the rules to point out that they own them and may sell those to advertisers.
Adamski, I m undecided why anyone would concern yourself with Google stealing images. They are so gigantically huge that photos are really not and should stop on their radar. If Google, FB or some other giant online service wanted to utilize your images they'd and there would 't be much you could do anyway. It will be a PR disaster for those to do so and all of you must do is take a have a look at Instagram when they thought we would change their tos. It sure didn t drive them long after everyone outcry to vary those terms that might have given them the authority to commercialize your images.
Personally, I am not related to Google making photos readily available for term papers along with such uses. I am more related to Getty and also the other stock agencies paying me pennies to use on images and cutting the proportion of what a photographer makes on a graphic license down to alongside nothing. Google has bigger fish to fry than photographers and photography. Getty within the other hand, well paying photographers as low as they can, that s their business structure.
In my estimation, I think that this Google buying Nik software is often a positive thing. Now, with almost unlimited resources to create the most effective products possible, Nik software/Google gets the opportunity to really shine. I prefer to maintain an optimistic outlook with this.
All this being said, I m unclear what any of it's to do having a great product like Silver Effex Pro 2.
Silver Efex Pro 2 arrived before Google bought Nik.
Nice Review. SEP2 is extremely good. I don t care if Google bought Nik or otherwise, the Nik plugins are the top.
