One of my strongest memories of fall could be the smell of fresh sage. My mother experienced a little patch of sage growing in the garden, then when I was a young child I would pluck a number of of its leaves, rub them gently between my fingers, then press those to my nose. If you intend to make things that much easier, you may roast your squash a couple of days in advance and have the soup after you re ready.
