Cast overview, first billed only:
2001 is often a story of evolution. Sometime within the distant past, someone as well nudged evolution by investing a monolith on Earth presumably elsewhere through the entire universe likewise. Evolution then enabled humankind to succeed in the moons surface, where another monolith can be found, one which signals the monolith placers that humankind has evolved that far. Now a race begins between computers HAL and human Bowman to succeed in the monolith placers. The winner will attain the next step in evolution, whatever that could be. Written by Larry Cousins

See more Sometimes reading the consumer comments on IMDB fills me with despair for that species. For anybody to dismiss 2001: A Space Odyssey as boring they have to have no curiosity about science, technology, philosophy, history or even the art of film-making. Finally I understand why most Hollywood productions are very shallow and vacuous - they understand their audience.
Thankfully, those who cannot appreciate Kubricks accomplishment are nevertheless a minority. Most viewers is able to see the intelligence and sheer virtuosity that went in to the making in this epic. This may be the film that squeeze science in science fiction, and its particular depiction of space travel and mankinds future remains unsurpassed today. It was up to now ahead of it's once again time that humanity still hasnt swept up.
2001 is primarily a technical film. The reason it can be slow, and stuffed with minutae is that the aim ended up being realistically envision the near future of technology and also the past, from the awe inspiring opening scenes. The films greatest strength is from the details. Remember that if this film was developed, man still hadnt caused it to be out for the but there it's in 2001, and thats precisely the start on the journey. To create a very incredibly detailed vision of the near future that 35 years later it's still the very best we have is beyond belief - I still cant work out how a few of the shots were done. The films only notable mistake was the optimism in which it predicted mankinds technological and social development. It is our shame the year 2001 wouldn't look much like the film 2001, not Kubricks.
Besides the incredible computer graphics, camera work and hang up design, Kubrick also is definitely the viewer with lots of food for seriously considered what it ways to be human, and the place that the human race is certainly going. Yes, the ending is weird and hard to know - but thats the type of the longer term. Kubrick and Clarke have started the duty of envisioning it, now its up on the audience to keep. Theres no neat resolution, no definitive full stop, because then the listeners could stop thinking following final reel. I know thats what most audiences manage to want today, but Kubrick isnt planning to let us off so lightly.
Im glad to determine that this film is within the IMDB best players films, and just wish so it were even higher. Stanley Kubrick is among the very finest film-makers stuck known, and 2001 his finest accomplishment. 10/10.

SIR ARTHUR C. CLARKE 1917-2008 wrote the novel and co-authored the screenplay for 2001: A Space Odyssey. He has been knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, and he could be the only science-fiction writer to get nominated for that Nobel Peace Prize. His fiction and nonfiction have sold greater than one hundred million copies on the net worldwide.
Whats this? This 1982 book that contains 55 chapters with an epilog, by Sir Arthur C. Clarke who said for years which a sequel was clearly impossible, is usually a hybrid book mainly because it attempts not just to be a sequel to his previous novel 2001: A Space Odyssey, published in 1968 but additionally attempts to become a sequel on the 1968 movie also referred to as 2001: A Space Odyssey.
In this novel, a joint Russian-American space mission is sent for the planet Jupiter about the spaceship called Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov to discover what happened towards the previous American spaceship called Discovery that has been sent previously in 2001. As well, Leonovs crew is to discover the alien artifact otherwise known as the monolith encountered by Discovery, also to investigate it for the maximum extent possible.
Because this book attempts being a sequel on the previous novel and also the 1968 movie, it draws four a variety of readers:
iv whoever has read the earlier novel and also have seen the 1968 movie as I have.
1 Those who have not see the previous movie or are yet to seen the 1968 movie will relish this novel. Reading the earlier novel or seeing the 1968 movie isn't needed to fully grasp this novel. There is good character interaction as there are both known and speculative space science throughout. Read more

I reread this novel to the third time recently and enjoyed it likewise much as I had the initial two times. 2001 is a bit more famous plus the movie is significantly better known, but 2010 is the best sci-fi book outside Clarkes Rendezvous with Rama.
My curiosity about learning about our solar system exploded reading this novel. It is incredibly intriguing, you are able to visualize Jupiter and its particular moons in close proximity, and you really are just dying to view them yourself. I feel like its this sort of tease, this is as close as I is ever going to get to extraordinary king in our solar system.
The descriptions of Europa will still be highly accurate and also you cant help but wonder how true the novel might often be. The ending was fantastic and quite unexpected, I really didnt view it coming.
What makes 2010 great I guess may be the pacing. If there is any semblance of any slow part, it could be the beginning. After which the novel will take off and cannot be placed down.
Best of most, 2010 doesn't have any with the mindbending trippy stuff was on the end of 2001. I was quite thankful for the.
2061 and 3001 can also be good reads, but it can be 2010 that stands over the rest in Clarkes spectacular four part odyssey. I doubt you will be disappointed, if you liked 2001, I guarantee that you just wont be disappointed.

2010 brings the approach of an second Cold War relating to the United States and Russia, and on the same time, a challenge is raised if the Discoverys orbit is decaying and risks an accident on Jupiters moon, Io. Heywood Floyd, the director in the Discovery mission in 2001, is shipped on the Russian ship Alexei Leonov to aid stabilize the doomed space station. His other mission objectives is usually to solve the mysteries between HAL 9000s malfunction along with the status of David Bowman as soon as the encounter with TMA-2, or Big Brother, a gargantuan version on the monolith found for the Moon. And even more questions develop if your Chinese ship Tsien comes in contact with life on Europa.
The characters have become believable, with many good lines from Max. Not to worry, said Max cheerfully. All that will be gone after you wake up. Its-what does one say?-expendables. Well eat your living area empty as soon as you need it. I promise. He patted his stomach. pg. 31 The plot develops very quickly, with strange new conflicts in every single section. The author also gives excellent descriptions of what may very well be true behind many planets and moons secrets. The core of Jupiter, forever beyond human reach, was obviously a diamond as big because the Earth. pg. 190
Clarke tells the story plot very well, and everything seems circulation evenly, quite the unlike my expectations. This book has never been boring, and may keep you reading until your vision bleed otherwise you finish it, no matter which comes first. The ending just isn't at all sudden, plus it leaves the tale wide open to get more. Of course, Clarke has advantage with this fact inside sequel 2061, but thats beyond this review. This is usually a must-read for virtually any Sci-Fi fan.

In the historical past of 2001, Clarke introduced us in an advanced civilization that helped Earths dumb apes evolve numerous years ago into modern humans by teaching them the best way to kill prey. Im intrigued by these mysterious characters lurking inside background. They, like us, evolved from ocean slime, then into intelligent, self-aware carbon-based beings like us, then into living machines, and ultimately into organized states of your energy. Then the target audience suddenly translated into modern days. Humans, developing powerful artificial intelligent life, are in the cusp of using next evolutionary leap. This, post-Darwinian evolution, is really what 2001 is REALLY about. 2010 continues the devlopment of the theme once we learn with the lost astronauts fate. He has been ascended with the avanced beings in a being of one's. Still, the topic products post-Darwinian evolution might mean to us inside the near future is just not really developed whatsoever.
On one other hand, a magazine I recently read and recommend, Beyond Future Shock by Alaniz, sees where Clarke coldly left off. Like 2001, it is usually a strong science fiction book. Starting in WWI, tracking the lives, romances, struggles and triumphs of numerous infant Germans who'll live through WWII, the Cold War, and in to the age of youth cocktails when these students are in their late 90s, Alaniz tracks the science behind next transhuman age with masterful, subtle Clarkian writing. He also tracks the wide ranging perils, as well as the problem of Luddism and religion versus science. As you sink deep into Alanizs powerful imagery, you will discover yourself thinking of mankinds various potential fates inside coming ages: some horribly dystopian some reasonably utopian. Singularity look at the new book by Kurzweil will quickly be upon for us.
For me, Alaniz has carried out with genius what Clarke only touched upon in 2001. I am fully sastisfied now.

A space mission that may reveal mans destiny is jeopardized using a malfunctioning shipboard computer. A dazzling journey that tops every one of them - - and showed just how for other effects-packed films that followed.
When Stanley Kubrick recruited Arthur C. Clarke to collaborate around the proverbial intelligent science fiction film, its a secure bet neither the maverick auteur nor the good science fiction writer knew they will virtually redefine the parameters from the cinema experience. A daring experiment in unconventional narrative inspired by Clarkes short story The Sentinel, 2001 is usually a visual tone poem barely 40 minutes of dialogue in the 139-minute film that charts an incredible history of human evolution. From the dawn-of-man discovery of crude but deadly tools from the films opening sequence on the journey on the spaceship Discovery and metaphysical birth in the star child at films end, Kubricks vision is meticulous and precise. In keeping using the directors underlying theme of dehumanization by technology, the notorious, seemingly omniscient computer HAL 9000 has more warmth and personality compared to the human astronauts it supposedly is serving. The director also leaves the meaning in the black, rectangular alien monoliths open for discussion. This theme, partially, is exactly what makes 2001 a motion picture like nothing else, though dated since its postmillennial space exploration has proven optimistic in comparison with reality. Still, the film is timelessly provocative in their pioneering search for inner- and outer-space consciousness. With spectacular, painstakingly authentic computer graphics that have stood the exam of time, Kubricks film is absolutely nothing less compared to a cinematic milestone-puzzling, provocative, and excellent. -Jeff Shannon

In regards to your uneducated 2.35:1 zealot reviewer, like a Director of Photography, I can state unequivocally that 2001 is supposed being in 2.20:1 aspect ratio. It was shot by two.20:1. It was not shot in Cinemascope or anamorphic Panavision, which can be 2.35:1. It was shot with straight lenses in Super Panavision 70 65mm negative, 70mm projection print with soundtrack. Super Panavision 70 can be a 2.20:1 aspect ratio format. When you're watching a 70mm print in a very theater you're watching 2.20:1, that has been never as wide because the anamorphic formats. Learn your aspect ratios.
Not to bring up the fact that Kubrick went towards the extraordinary effort of exposing his camera work composite shots as successive passes around the original undeveloped 65mm negative after it being held sometimes in refrigeration for up to your year or even more waiting to the next pass so that the many composite visual elements are first generation within the original camera negative, rather compared to cheaper plus much more common optical composite dupe negative inserts. Amazing. That is why it seems as good as it can. No optical negative generations.
A Beautiful one of the most beneficial executions in the 70mm format ever.
A true Visual Masterpiece.

Two mysteries keep a wide range of folks from making sense in this movie: 1. What may be the nature with the monolith? What, finally, would it do, or portend, or symbolize? 2. What, specifically, causes HAL to behave such apparently irrational and pointlessly destructive ways aboard Discovery One?
If you cant answer these questions, then 2001, as beautiful as it can be to look at, will add scratching your mind. Well, with deep respect toward all who admire this glorious movie, with awareness the issues have, partly, been successfully addressed by other Amazon reviewers, Id want to elaborate on both of these questions.
First, the monolith. As most Amazon reviewers understand, the extra-terrestrial monolith serves to aid life evolve. This isnt explained by anyone from the movie, but it's clearly demonstrated. In The Dawn Of Man segment, the ape touches the monolith and experiences a cognitive revolution when he suddenly understands the benefits of tools for survival. The scientists who chose the moon-based monolith don't know about the apes original exposure on Earth. They cant take their discovery in context, and, proceeding out of this nearly complete ignorance, they send an exploratory spaceship that you follow the monoliths radio signal to Jupiter.
Because additional monoliths appear in many visually fabulous settings toward the films end, some viewers believe the monoliths function becomes ambiguous and even deliberately impossible to be aware of. But there is no real need to achieve for heavy symbolism. The movie definitely makes the most sense if the monoliths role stays exactly the same: it facilitates evolution wherever it seems.
On to HALs aberrant behavior. At first, this seems a significantly deeper mystery. Read more

In the summertime of 1969, when I was each one of ten years old, Mom Dad bundled all us kids into your white Oldsmobile stationwagon and drove for the Rockville Maryland Drive-In to find out 2001: A Space Odyssey. I didnt know much regarding the film, but like a budding sci-fi fan I was already champing on the bit to find out it. Needless to say, 2001 rearranged my universe. I cant say I understood the movie completely in the time, but I do recall talking my parents ears off regarding the film in the drive home.
2001 is personally the best movie of time. Ive seen it more times than I can count, purchased the soundtrack repeatedly vinyl and tape tire out, you realize, read Arthur C. Clarkes novelization more than once, and browse every other part of literature around the film Ive had the opportunity to get my practical.
And recently my partner Greg purchased this Stanley Kubrick Collection DVD from Amazon, also it was just yesterday that we sat to watch it on our new 32-inch TV as well as in 5.1 digital sound. What a treat! First of every one of the print is approximately as pristine as anything Ive experienced; this movie probably looks better today on DVD laptop or computer did in most suburban movie theatres back 1969. I was immediately struck my how sharp the whole picture was, specially the clean lines on the monolith that appears mysteriously amongst our australopithicine ancestors 4.5 million in years past. While watching this film yesterday evening, Greg lamented the belief that kids today who develop on merely CGI effects in science fiction movies may didn't a true appreciation to the fine art of model-building; the Orion shuttle, the Discovery ship as well as its attendant space pods, are stunning types of elegance in design. I just stood a nice speak to Rose, at Amazon, and her replies were so conflicted and confusing, I have no idea if even Amazon knows the notice means. The only really useful info I got from her, was that when it doesnt play, I can send it back for any full refund within four weeks.

More than 9000 old games to download without cost!
This is just about the most original puzzle games ever designed, and my favs Apple II game. The objective here would be to escape from Robotropolis, an unhealthy underground robotic city. To escape, you should program your robots to fix various mind-bending logic puzzles.
The game has one of the most effective on-line tutorials Ive ever seen in the game. It is at some ways such as the programming puzzle in Sierras Castle of Dr. Brain, only much more fun- and difficult. There is IMHO no better method to learn mathematical logic than farmville:
I loved the game. Still have it whilst still being have the Tandy 1000 that I played it on. Of course I had those wonderful Radio Shack Tandy joysticks.
I still have a very working Coco II. Isnt history great?
How to try and do fine movement on the computer and not using a numpad?
Does anyone kow the way to get after dark skyway puzzle odd before even i order? This could be the four buttons. I tried 1, 3, 2, 4 both with just barely touching each button to really make it quick along with touching each prior to the robots bumper hits. Maybe I ought to hit start with a different time or Any help will be great!!!
I played this in my 64kb trs80 coco, my first computer.
i yearn for the old times of computing, i hope to obtain this running tonight, returns so many memories.
Any idea how you can do fine movement in Boxer for Mac? I cant often get almost anything to work
Yes, support the left and right shift buttons down when using the keypad numbers for fine movement with numlock on; doesnt work while using numbers over the letters on your own keyboard.
For fine movement try holding both shift keys left and right on the same time and move. I think that operates if I remember right.
scratch that last comment of mine. the slow movement is okay as long as you have a very keypad and numlock is turned off
Does other people have the problem to become unable to accomplish fine movement with this game? As far as I can tell from Google, youre expected to hold down Cntrl and utilize the arrow keys. But doing that causes the arrow secrets to not work in any respect! Ive tried Shift-arrow also - no luck. Im running this in DosBox over a Windows 7 machine. Everything else appears to work fine. Love farmville - havent played since I was obviously a kid!
why will i go for the comment box?
Heard about the bingo through a article. Thought Id try it.
Awesome Game, just read an appraisal about it, must download.
Probably the best game Ive ever played. Amazingly advanced for its a pointer. Looking back into it - they effectively turned object-oriented programming right into a point and click on puzzle solving adventure. You can watch this system run in real-time with lines changing color since the states change.
Theres also a debugger inside the form on the Innovation Lab.
Thanks guys. This is great stuff.
Cool game. Program robots with digital logic to exit a number of mazes.
Share your gamer memories, help others to operate the game or comment anything youd like. If you have trouble running Robot Odyssey, look at abandonware guide first!
