Anyways, I am glad Iggy Fernandez invited us to participate in first within this interview, and second to collaborate within the meeting planned for January. On that meeting Mauro and I will conduct a 1 hour full day workshop on Practical SQL Tuning January 28 in Northern California. Sometimes you choose to do what you must do. So here I confess doing something I usually avoid: forcing an Execution Plan that's not precisely the same as utilizing a more conventional way for Plan stability.
This is usually a case on 11.2.0.3.0 base release where the approval vendor sets the optimizer to 9i, and tweaks other CBO parameters in questionable ways, then some queries produce suboptimal plans as you expected; and you're calledto help without changing the most apparent.
There is usually a family of queries from anad-hoc query generator that allows users to issuequeries and not using a set of selective predicates. These queriesjoin several large tables as well as their performance is poor as you expected as well!. On top with the previous, all of these queries add the CBO Hint along with the questionable DISTINCT keyword. Note: it is extremely common for developers to throw a DISTINCT keyword to prevent duplicates the location where the mere presence of duplicates can be an indication of the application bug; exactly why fix it if I can hide it, right?.
There is but one caveat although: these queries such as a generic predicate rownum :b1, and value passed defaults to 5000, so users rationale is when I only want the 1st X rows my query should return fast. This highlights still another questionable practice as it is often hard to imagine a person scrolling 5000 rows and coming to a sense of such large set, especially when the complete filtered set could well be several million rows long. So the original concern is questionable in a number of ways. Nevertheless, we occassionally are called to assist besides providing advice. And no, we are really not allowed to slap hands ;-
The best part about it is that any of us can make use of this extrapredicate on rownum and produce these queries to return the primary X rows really fast; and I mean lower than 5 seconds as an alternative to over one hour if not more! And if users want not 5000 but 500 or perhaps 50 rows, then you can be inside sub-second range!
You could be thinking FIRSTROWS optimization, and this was my first try. Unfortunately, on 11.2.0.3.0, even reversing every one of the suboptimal CBO parameters with the session level, I would consistentlyget an Execution Plan using a fewHash Joins as well as a large Cost; of course, if I were to make a Nested Loop Plan, the cost can be several orders of magnitude larger hence the CBO may not pick it! Nevertheless, this type of Nest Loop only Execution Plan would fulfill the person s expectations, regardlessthe validityof the first request. And yes, CBO statistics are OK, not perfect doesn't imply OK. One more bit of info: this is simply not Exadata! whether it were Exadata almost certainly these same Execution Plans with full table scans and Hash Joins would simply fly!.
So, my issue became: How do I force an Execution Plan that only contains Nested Loops? If I could accomplish that, then this COUNT STOP operation might help me to prevent my SQL execution once I fetched the initial X rows Hash Join will not allow me do this. Remember: these tables have literally an incredible number of rows. I could pepper these queries which has a ton of CBO Hints and I would get my desired Nested Loop only Execution Plan But that could well be a lot of work and tricky at best.
I could had used a SQL Profile, but I think this dirty trick of suppressing Hash Joins and Sort Merge Joins, could well be better served witha SQL Patch. I alsothought Siebel: They do tweak CBO parameters at the same time, plus they suppress Hash Joins, nonetheless they change System and Session level parameters Since I wanted my change tobe very localized, SQL Patch couldprovide me precisely what I needed.
Under the Downloads section about the margin of the page, there is really a cscripts link which includes the script. I used this script and passed since the second parameter the subsequent string 1st parameter is SQLID. With aSQL Patch generated that way, I could systematically create a Nested-Loops only Execution Plan for these few queries. I did not must change an original SQL, nor alter the CBO environment with the System or Session level, neither restrict the query generator, and I did not was required to educate the users to stop such unbounded queries.

I think of this as technique above a temporary work-around instead of a solution to your actual issue. In this case the best way to handle this issue could be:
Have the approval vendor certify their application on the latest release from the database and reset all CBO related parameters, plus
Have the appliance vendor remove CBO Hints and DISTINCT keyword from queries, plus
Configure the ad-hoc query generator to restrictusers from executing queries without selective predicates, then
Tune those outlier queries that could still require some work to perform much like business requirements, and possibly
Anyways, the potentialof by using a SQL Patch to tweak an Execution Plan in mysterious ways is rather powerful, and another we may wish to keep inside the back of our minds for the rainy day
In most all cases edb360 takes lower than 1hr to complete. But I have often heard of times when it takes considerably longer than that. In a corner case it turned out taking a couple of days and it were required to be killed.
Well, edb360 executes a huge number of SQL statements sequentially intentionally. Many of these queries read data from AWR in particular from ASH. So, let's imagine your ASH historical table has 2B rows, additionally, on top of that you are yet to gathered statistics on AWR tables in years, thus CBO under-estimates cardinality and tends make use of index access and nested loops. In such extreme cases you might end up with suboptimal execution plans that expect to go back a few rows, truly read a few billion rows using index access operations and nested loops. 5. If after dealing with steps 1-4 above, edb360 still takes longer than several hours, do email author and still provide 4 files from the first step.

Quite often I learn of your system where nobody changed anything and suddenly it is experiencing some strange behavior. Then after diligent investigation as it turns out someone changed somewhat parameter with the System level, but somehow disregardedmentioning it since he/she thought it had no connection on the unexpected behavior. As we all know, System parameters are big knobs that individuals don t change lightly, still we sometimes see unknown changes just like the one described.
Script below creates a list of changes to System parameter values, indicating whenever a parameter was changed and by which value into which value. It will not filter out cache re-sizing operations, or resource manager plan changes. Both could well be easy to exclude, but I d rather see those global changes listed too.
Note: This script below should just be executed if the site incorporates a license with the Oracle Diagnostics pack or Tuning pack, as it reads from AWR.

During my 17 years at Oracle, I developed several tools and scripts. The largest plus much more widely used is SQLTXPLAIN. It is available through My Oracle Support MOS under documentid 215187.1.
SQLTXPLAIN, also referred to as SQLT, is often a tool for SQL diagnostics, including Performance and Wrong Results. I am the first developer and author, consider very initial phases of its development, this tool encapsulates the assistance of many bright engineers, DBAs, developers while others, whoconstantly helped to enhance this tool on every new releaseby providingvaluable feedback. SQLT is nothing but the product of many ideas from some people. I was only the lucky guy that chosen to build something useful with the Oracle SQL tuning community.
When I thought we would join Enkitec back on 2013, I asked Mauro Pagano to take care of my baby I mean SQLT, and sure enough he did a great job. Mauro fixed the vast majority of my bugs, because he jokes about, plus incorporated many of his own:-. Mauro kept SQLT in great shape and he was capable to continue improving it on every era. Since certainly one of my hobbies is always to build free software that I also consume, my current work is on eDB360, eAdam and eSP. The most popular and openly available is eDB360, which basically gives your a 360-degree view of an database without installing anything.
