Yesterday was time for any walk as it wasn t raining hard; no less than not when I headed out. As is the case I grabbed a camera for taking with me but now it was a difficult decision. Was it worth actually bothering?

I walk during this area quite regularly and also over the years have tried to look at landscape images. It is, undoubtedly one from the most challenging locations I have encounter. I have completed it in all climate snow isn t bad, all the time of year and all sorts of times of almost all the time but I seldom come away with any photographs that I like.
This time I grabbed the RX10 and if we do decision making I decided to look at it. In the conclusion I stopped an overall of 4 times for taking a handful of pictures, but each and every time I captured something I that can match. I have never managed anything so productive inside the past why the sudden turnaround within my fortunes?
It s not necessarily down to equipment, although I really like while using RX10. No, I think it s more regarding how I approached the photography in other words walk. I was recently contacted by somebody that had purchased my Nik Silver Efex book but was experiencing difficulity. I mention inside book that Nik provide numerous useful presets for their site that happen to be free to download. In case that you are wondering, the style above didn t use any presets. It was shot having a Panasonic LX5 on the top in the Empire State Building in New York shortly, after sunset on the rather dull day. But on the LX5 in another post soon.
I experienced a request in the weekend to deliver further information about how I did the Silver Efex conversion to the Friday 003 image. So here is often a high level breakdown in the work.
This involved looking at the picture and focusing on how I wanted it to seem when finished. I won t begin too much detail here as you can understand the finished conversion which means you know what I had in your mind. I will explain though that I sometimes make notes and rough drawings to help you develop a perception before I start with the processing.
This involves making adjustments in Lightroom or whatever RAW converter you need to produce the highest quality starting image. Quite often this calls for contrast and colour adjustments that will aid the ultimate conversion to B W. For example by making each of the colours stronger I can separate them better when I convert the picture to non colored documents. You can begin to see the starting image below.
Here I removed the red boat about the right side as it had been distracting. I then applied Nik Dfine to take out any noise inside image then Nik RAW sharpener. This produced the starting image to the conversion which you will see below.
I start with all the Neutral preset as I understand what my finished image could consider looking like and I also realize how to create this. Sometimes it will help review the presets when you aren t sure what you would like to do.
First I apply a Yellow filter to assist darken the sun and lighten the bottom slightly. I also boost the filter strength to 100% on the default 50%. It s then the perfect time to emphasise this effect even further while using the Soft Contrast slider along with a setting of - 40%. You can view the result below.
This has achieved a fantastic balance relating to the foreground and the night sky but overall the picture is too light. I use the Dynamic Brightness slider at - 50% plus the Amplify Black slider at 20% to deal with this. The outcome is shown below.
Next step should be to make the night sky more dramatic so I produce a selection using a group of control points. I then raise the Structure and Amplify Black sliders to 20%. The result can be shown below.
Next I convey a curves adjustment to darken the bottom 2/3 in the tonal curve. The resulting image is shown below.
My final part of Silver Efex would be to add in some grain. I gave up together with the grain sliders previously but recently they've been improved and therefore are now quite good. I use a grain setting of 400 which is fairly fine. I used to shoot using Kodak TMax so that is comparable to the fine grained films.
In the earlier version from the image I used Nik Analogue Efex to give a vignette and film boarder admittedly it absolutely was a slide film boarder but I liked it. In this version I dodge and burn in Photoshop to produce the style at the very start on this post. I also tweaked the contrast further using another filter called Contrast Master from PhotoWiz. I made these final changes differently because I took longer over the edit, deciding I wanted to generate an A3 print with the finished image.

I captured this image of any frosty yesterday morning within the edge of an car park. It did raise a number of eyebrows from passersby. My initial intension were to convert it to a white and black image using Nik Silver Efex Pro. I made a couple of variations in the image using different conversions, some high key some low key and a few high contrast but none ticked your box for me.
Then I remembered a whole new Nik programme that I had downloaded whilst looking to fix an issue with Lightroom 5.2 still not fixed and thought I would have a go. The filter is termed Analogue Efex and enables you to simulate a variety of camera and film effects. Usually I am not in awe of such applications and be honest, looking throughout the presets I wasn t hopeful. I then found the custom sections where you could create your own effects and the style below was the end result. I produced the colour version and after that converted this to the non colored documents version above with Silver Efex Pro.

Here are 10 free presets I want to share for anybody who are using Silver Efex Pro 2.

Most these presets happen to be designed for photos just like the one above - landscapes with green foreground and blue sky. Scroll down to look at a check out what each preset does to your sample image.
Inspired by artist Gregory Colberts video Ashes and Snow.
This is largely a strong sepia toned preset I built to match some of the most popular scenes through the movie.
Soft and bright highlights with dark vignette and many film grain.
Balanced to preserve most details inside the highlights and shadows. I dont typically take advantage of this preset for landscapes nonetheless it works well for portraits and other work.
This preset has nothing related to Gandhi - I thought that it was a fun name to get a preset.
This is near to Full Dynamic Range though more intense shadows and slightly lighter highlights.
Dark and moody, this preset sacrifices much in the shadows and many midtones.
Blue skies are rendered flat, greens and yellows are darkened. Shadows creep in to the midtones.
Dark, moody, plus a little foreboding. I wanted to develop a preset that's edgy, but kept the highlights. I added a brown paper toning making the shadows more bold with this effect.
An interesting alter from my more typical darker landscapes. When the Soft Contrast slider is adjusted see my walkthrough the darker midtones are brightened, though the darker shadows are kept. This makes an even more dynamic grayscale image, but I have found who's does not work towards all images.
This will be the foundational preset for the series of Silver Taint presets that has a sepia paper tone and cyanotype color.
From this preset you could make some further tweaks for making more bold and dynamic statements such as one below.
This can be a variation in the above preset, with stronger shadows.
