Faithfully capturing the electricity and spirit of the era when non colored documents was the very best form of photographic expression, Silver Efex Pro from Nik Software is the strongest tool for creating professional quality white and black images from a digital photographs. Color Efex Pro Complete is usually a plug-in for image editing applications.
Discover the great deal of possibilities together with your HDR images.
Photo Ninja can be a professional-grade RAW file converter.
Excellent photo editing tool to provide various sorts of watermarks for your images.
While there are numerous ways to create white and black digital photographs today, Nik software s Silver Efex Pro 2 shines as my preferred technique of creating Rich and beautiful non colored documents images inside digital darkroom.
I spent a long time in real darkrooms back at the start of my career in photography. I think that having that background allows me to possess a deeper appreciation products is possible about digital images today with a computer. We are coping with a golden ages of photography the location where the possibilities for creating incredible images is near limitless.
While programs like Lightroom, Aperture, and Photoshop are very capable of creating excellent black-and-white images, SilverEfex Pro 2 offers incredible diversity as well as simplicity with the user. Anyone who is serious about white and black photography must try this excellent plug-in.
Luckily, there can be a 15 day free trial with the software that lets you test the entire version without having limitations.
This software will be as intricate or as elementary as you would like so that it is, rendering it a solid selection for both amateur and professional photographers.
Some of my favourite features from the software will be the possibility to emulate kinds of film, adding filters, total control over film grain, controlling image structure, one-click toning, and Nik sU Point Technology. While I m using Silver Efex Pro 2 as being a Photoshop plug-in, you can even use it being a stand alone product or perhaps Lightroom and Aperture.
While you have a somewhat passable result from the neutral, there is absolutely no one button answer to creating a striking white and black image. The quick and way is to find out some on the presets. If you desire a quick conversion then one in the dozens of presets may be all you need to make use of. If however, you might be more just like me, then beginning with one in the presets is usually a good starting point before fine tuning the picture with the robust adjustment tools for your use.
Each preset contains adjustments in brightness, contrast, structure, tone, film grain, and even more. The serious photographer are able to use some of these presets to be a starting point and definitely will want to edit and fine tune the style more specifically to her or his needs.
As with the amount of other image editing plug-ins plus Photoshop itself coming to the extreme possibilities can result in destructive results on your image. Knowing ought to stop is one in the keys of producing high-quality digital photographs. The controls in SilverEfex Pro 2 are exceedingly in-depth yet obvious to use.
In this panel you control the conventional brightness and contrast within the picture. Two excellent features in this particular panel our dynamic brightness and soft contrast.
With the dynamic brightness slider Silver Efex Pro 2does some on the thinking available for you. The unique algorithms within the program assesses the several areas of the image and takes that information note to give you a lot smoother blending of overall brightness.
The soft contrast slider will also intelligently measure the overall contrast of your respective image and enable you to produce subtle yet striking changes to your photograph that you are working on. You really ought to play with this slider to be able to fully appreciate what you'll be able to do available for you. It is really a great addition on the plug-in.
Structure is one kind of my favorite areas of this software. Partly a sharpening tool, partly a depth tool; structure adds that extra amount of oomph to your photograph which takes it for the next level with regard to image detail.
I love this feature. Control points allow someone to selectively manipulate global adjustments in specific aspects of your image. You can add as much control points while you wish on the image you're editing and control the dimensions of each one individually. The top slider would be the size slider which controls the vicinity that you desire to adjust. The adjustment area is represented by the circle you see inside the photo above. Dragging the slider nearly everywhere allows you to definitely increase and decrease how big is each control. Below that slider would be the enhancement sliders giving you full control of global adjustments in each one control point.
With pinpoint precision you are able to adjust anything from brightness, contrast, structure, and in some cases add color returning to specific parts of your respective image. The selective adjustment control point tool can be a very powerful feature yet amazingly easy to work with.
Back once we were all still using film cameras, that it was customary to work with coloured filters on our lenses as a way to achieve certain books to your black-and-white images. The same effects is now achieved in Silver Efex Pro 2 with all the colour filter palette. In fact you could have far more control now than ever since you'll be able to manipulate these filters from 0 to 200% intensity together with select any color inside spectrum with the hue slider to pick any colour you may want want.
Once again you start with the presets is usually a good beginning but certainly not much of a one-button solution. Carefully selecting hue and strength allows one to have incredible treating the colour filter tool. In the thumbnails above you will notice how each filter reacts to some vividly colourful photograph at 100% intensity. Using large filters in partnership with global adjustments, selective control points, film grain, and toning allow someone to make stunning black-and-white or monochromatic images.
Like so many on the other features in Silver Efex Pro 2, the grain engine is very versatile and delivers near unlimited possibilities with regard to grain structure within your monochrome images. When are employed to shoot with film I was a major fan of high grain films from Kodak, Fuji, and Ilford. Today I gravitate a lot more towards hi-def low grain images. There still is really a place for grain in photography though, especially in monochrome photographs. With precision control in the grain engine it's got never been so cool to create beautiful high grain white and black digital photos.
I ve always been an enormous fan of sepia and selenium toning of white and black photographs but I sure never enjoyed the horrible chemical smells particularly when working with sepia toners within a traditional darkroom. This is just another excuse why I love implementing digital imaging which provides me much more versatility and is particularly far better with the environment likewise. Like the other tools in Silver Efex pro 2 the toning tools may be extensive.
You can make use of any on the 24 different presets for toning your images or design your own unique tones and save those as presets also.
Creating custom vignettes has never been simpler. Using the vignette and burnt edges tool allows you to definitely darken or lighten the edges within your photo with good accuracy. Once again you'll be able to start with considered one of several presets and tweak the results quite nicely together with the different adjustment sliders.
This is one on the only parts from the software that I find lacking. Image borders are tricky as well as very subjective in terms how people judge them. Is a border really necessary? I d point out that in 100% of business professional photography applications the result would be no. They just risk looking tacky. While I do such as the use of image borders in iPhone or Android photography, those are simply just fun and playful strategies to sharing snapshots. If your professional images demand a fancy border to ensure they are good, this s not to imply much concerning the images.
These borders are customizable to some degree. There are several standard presets that you simply can fine tunebut you are able to t useful favourites as custom presets. Even if I doubt that I ll employ this feature much, the borders are relatively congratulations and certainly fitting in style to be used along with monochrome photography. There is room for improvement here though.
Silver Efex Pro 2 allows you make use of any of its old presets but you may also create your individual. Once you achieve a total look that you simply enjoy, clicking the Add Preset button in the bottom left of one's screen will allow you to definitely save and name your custom presets. Now with one click you may re-build your favourite overall looks on any new image that you're working on.
Creating and naming your individual custom presets utilizing the selective tools could be a great time saver for future projects.
If when you're reading this review you really feel like I m not finding anything wrong while using Silver Efex Pro 2, you re near to being correct. While I don t perform a lot of grayscale work anymore, when I do, it is my head to software.
Nik s intelligent dynamic brightness, fine structure, and soft contrast sliders
Compatibility with Photoshop, Lightroom, and Aperture
a. Go to your History browser.
b. Click Compare once, this may have the History State Selector turn up this may feel like an odd UI, but after we always displayed the historical past state selector within the single image view mode, everyone that tested the software program got really confused ever since the control didn t do one thing. It s always visible inside the side-by-side and split-view modes.
c. Drag the History State Selector to Original Image
d. Press and support the Compare button
Nik Software offers some excellent tools for digital photographers andSilver Efex Pro 2 if you ask me is their flagship plug-in. Not only does it are very effective and offer quality results that top photographers world wide are using but it can be a lot of fun to do business with. I do not state that about most software I use for work.
I ve been wanting to talk about my Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 reviewfor sometime but I kew it will take some the perfect time to cover every one of the features properly. This is usually a powerful and robust software program aimed at professional photographers and proficient amateurs. If you re aiming to take your monochrome photography on the next level, then whole process almost is exactly what that you are looking for. Try the complete product without having limitations for 15 days to determine if it s right available for you.
Nik Software offers several approaches to learn how to work with their products more effectively. They offer webinars hosted by top professional photographers, when needed video tutorials, and also a blog filled with valuable thoughts. All with this material can be acquired for free.
Hi Ken nice review; very complete.
One comment re: your Cons : you possibly can see the main color image w/in Silver Efex Pro 2. You ought to choose either the split preview or side-by-side preview, then select the History button and select original image on the edit list.
However, I d desire to see a simple solution with this. Adding an added button to View Original could well be a welcome feature to Silver Efex Pro 2.
I love Silver Effex Pro but are already extremely not wanting to buy the newest version since Google acquired Nik.
My guess is support for Nik plugins probably won t last. Time will inform.
Why would google wish to support a photography plugin. The got the things they wanted which had been snapseed. I don t trust Google period.
That being said, I have tried OnOne yet still love the incredible control points of Silver Effex.
Matt, Google would not purchase Nik mainly for Snapseed. I have that on really good authority. Snapseed is often a quality product for mobile and casual photo users though the rest with the items Nik offers is quality professional editing software.
Google is really a HUGE supporter from the photo community. Just see whatever they do on Google and I think your fears will disappear.:
I totally love SilverEfex Pro 2, it s 100x superior to the 1st version. NIK is often a AWESOME company who responds quickly to clients and offers fantastic customer support. I utilize this software all of the time for a great deal of my work.
For the following version, let them know to result in the control point borders adapt to different shapes or perform like a quick-selection tool. Round doesn t always be employed by me.
Great review I ve tried the product or service and would desire to have it, however the cost versus onOne s Suite was too much! I ll try and win it!
Sure they re nice to photogs on G now but my guess will it be s to be able to get as numerous pro photos on the and one day affect the rules to point out that they own them and can sell these phones advertisers.
Adamski, I m unclear why anyone would be worried about Google stealing images. They are extremely gigantically huge that photos are not and must not be for their radar. If Google, FB or some other giant online service wanted to utilize your images they will and there would cease much you could do anyway. It could be a PR disaster for those to do so and many types of you must do is consider Instagram if they decided to switch their terms. It sure didn t drive them long after everyone outcry to switch those terms that might have given them the legal right to commercialize your images.
Personally, I am not focused on Google making photos designed for term papers along with other such uses. I am more focused on Getty along with the other stock agencies paying me pennies to be used on images and cutting the proportion of such a photographer makes while on an image license to next to nothing. Google has bigger fish to fry than photographers as well as their photography. Getty alternatively, well paying photographers less than they can, that s their business design.
In my estimation, I think how the Google acquisition of Nik software can be a positive thing. Now, with almost unlimited resources to build the best products possible, Nik software/Google provides the opportunity to really shine. I prefer and keep an optimistic outlook about it.
All this being said, I m uncertain what any one it has with regards to a great product like Silver Effex Pro 2.
Silver Efex Pro 2 arrived on the scene before Google bought Nik.
Nice Review. SEP2 is fantastic. I don t care if Google bought Nik you aren't, the Nik plugins would be the best.
Working with Silver Effex Pro 2 are few things short of amazing personally. I love having total treating my images. Nik Software allows that happen when others flunk.
I have everythinh else for decades but at the same time buy it.
Yes, Google supports photography on Google.
But Google is a presence platform. When you subscribe with a Google service you're now forced into making a Google account with the real name. They then have the information you have and can collect your data on what you need to do, what you're interested in etc.
In fact, Google is usually a credentialed provide or trusted identities to the federal government. National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace.
The Google social networking is just a layer utilized to collect more data on users identities.
How does Google make their? Advertising. Period.
Everything they actually is in support with their advertising efforts in a way or some other.
I get why snapseed was purchased. They can integrate that techonlogy into Picasa etc.
However, I don t observe supporting Photoshop plugins to get a very small volume of users benefits Google or their advertising business. Why would they keep support it?
So ask Google What could be the roadmap for Nik Silver Effex 3?.
Because they still contain the team they may update the plugins for the present time. But I can t imagine them supporting or developing Nik plugins long lasting.
Why in the world would anyone trust Google on this whenever they have a protracted history of acquisition and destruction of items.
Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc All are free services. If you don t comparable to their terms, don t register. If you don t like Google, use Bing or Yahoo.
This is not only a post about internet privacy, Google, or image copyright. I d regards if comments may very well be about the program.
Hi there! I m an item manager on G Photos and was the merchandise manager at Nik focusing on all with the products from plug-ins to mobile.
I just planned to chime in here regarding Matt s comment concerning the long-term strategy to the plug-ins. While obviously I cannot discuss any specifics, I can declare that we DO have an extended-term strategy for your plug-ins, we prefer to continue to produce and release new plug-ins, and I m really looking forward to what we re working away at.
I will surely understand the trepidation caused by previous acquisitions at Google, even so the cool thing about working at Google is which everybody here from executive level on down would prefer to admit when something hasn t worked inside the past also to try new things.
I also recognize that nothing I nor someone else for that matter say can definitely convince someone who seems to obtain their mind made-up about they believe the future holds Hi Matt:, so all I can have to say is wait and discover :.
Great thorough review Ken.
Only used many a few times over a friends computer. It is simply amazing the natural affects you are able to achieve. Ansell Adams could be proud!
This software looks fascinating. I would like to cut my bw conversion time down yet retain fine control in the detail likewise. I am also interested to understand resolutions the program supports? Many extensions are suited to electronic file formats and not so much printing.
Thanks with the heads up, I will have a test run soon, definitely.
Lisa, it can definitely handle print resolution files. The current max res is 100, 000 pixels by 100, 000 pixels, which breaks down to to 333inches by 333inches at 300 dpi. I d recommend with the most part though to process at normal resolution native res through your camera and after that upres after processing.
Ken, do you choose to do any HDR post processing in HDR Efex Pro or Photomatix before putting your images through Silver? Have you had enjoy it if you might have?
I think we ought to keep our eye around the has provided us some invaluable info on nik silver.I for example find dwelling on which politicians or big companies hidden agendas are can be quite negative. Life would be to short, lets focus on something considerably more beneficial brothers. Taking and enhancing our images.
Ken. You report that SEP2 might be used as being a stand alone processor. I can t locate any way of directly loading ANY kind of, jpeg, cr2, etc into Efex. Any suggestions you could possibly make could well be greatly appreciated. As I am using a limited budget, what is the reliable free photo editing program that can support/utilize/connect with SEP2? Thanks for your complete most useful information and comments from others. wj
While you can not open RAW files CR2 straight into Silver Efex Pro 2, it is possible to either use right click Open With Silver Efex Pro 2 or you may drag the file you wish to edit on top in the application icon. Please bear in mind when you edit a picture directly within SEP 2, the first image will probably be overwritten. Therefore, create a copy ahead of editing within SEP 2 directly.
At here, in addition to Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Lightroom, and Aperture, there aren't any other available host applications available that works well with Silver Efex Pro 2.
Great review and examples Ken!
I love NIk Silver Efex Pro! It s the only real software I use for my monochome work! I ve tried others, but nothing comes near to Nik! My prints and canvases turn out beautifully! Thanks for a real thorough review!:
For professional and gallery quality skill use, the belief that Silver Efex Pro cannot use RAW files is usually a no starter in the get go. You are merely throwing away an excessive amount of information when converting down to some 16bit TIFF file. It s like trying for making a quality silver oxide print at a poorly made internegative connected with an original film negative.
I think there s a amount of misunderstanding with what a RAW file is. I see this common misunderstanding considerably throughout the internet, hopefully I can elucidate somewhat:
To make this a tad shorter, I ve made some shortcuts, please forgive the shortening of most of these steps.
A RAW file, we all know, is essentially a direct dump with the digitized values captured from the sensor the voltages which might be measured at a photosite ought to be converted to your digital value. Since the majority of sensors we ll leave foveon sensors with this capture merely one color per pixel, and since sensors capture information linearly while our eyes perceive light logarithmically, a RAW file would look quite weird whenever we were to visualize it. It d be really dark, the color can be quite weird since sensors use a default color sensitivity which has to be white balanced, there d be just one color per pixel, also it d be somewhat soft since there s frequently an anti-alias filter on top from the sensor to counteract moire, which RAW converts try and address using a sharpening filter within the RAW conversion process. So considering a RAW file is in fact a non-starter.
From a processing perspective, you'll find three basic enhancements that happen to be done towards the RAW data: debayering the whole process of turning the variety of alternating R, G, and B pixels into a picture with three full channels for every color, white balancing consisting of applying a gain effect for the red and blue channels, clipping away the overhead at the value normalized together with the green channel, and any level of highlight recovery which happens by cutting down the highlight values from your clipped red and blue channels while reconstituting the green channel via color interpolation.
After that, food items . else happens on the 16-bit three channel image stage including gamma correction, sharpening, noise reduction, etc. Sure, some different raw converters will need different steps as you go along, and then there is some which could apply noise reduction ahead of debayering although that leads to some pretty odd artifacts, but this can be pretty much a general rule.
From that perspective, most from the things that we presume of being produced by our RAW converter has done on the could be argued as not only a RAW file.
The overhead and content of any 16-bit TIFF file is definitely quite large plus reality contains all with the usable data in the RAW file. Furthermore, seeking to do any sort of image processing about the real RAW data not just creates a lots of additional processing overhead since we don t would like to look at the RAW file data, we d need to do RAW conversion within the fly, it d also bring about both a new end result considering that the plug-in couldn t get precisely the same result as LR in addition to weird artifacts applying image processing algorithms one plane, alternating color channels would affect and impact the debayering as well as other processes that happen because RAW conversion pipeline.
So, finally, you wouldn t need to apply Silver Efex Pro around the RAW data, and you also lose nothing by doing it within the 16-bit data.
If you really need to maintain a complete RAW non-destructive pipeline, open your RAW file into Photoshop being a Smart Object and apply Silver Efex Pro as being a Smart Filter this may result in your skill to adjust the main RAW processing at anytime and also the power to tweak the Silver Efex Pro filter settings likewise.
Thanks much Josh for your very detailed explanation. I just love that Google is so dedicated towards the photo community through people like you having the time to talk about such valuable information. Cheers!
If you happen to be like me, individual who loved working within the darkroom, NIK include the best and many intuitive filters you are able to get. I simply love. Its very costly to work in the real darkroom today. But it could well be nice, being able to modify the circles, along with other shapes.I always shot in RAW.
Will SEP2 allow that you modify the presets? I much like the selenium tone with an image in which the shot has a comprehensive cool look having a touch of purple to deepen the blacks and enrich the midtones. Most on the selenium tones I have checked out either should much purple inside them or tend towards a warmer image. PS has some presets that allow different colors to become adjusted employing a curve or inputing specific numbers to render a dark tone you want. Does SEP2 employ a curve for every single color of an duotone, tritone or quadtone allowing these adjustments? Thank you.
I think you re referring towards the toning presets in SEP 2, that may be, your options found inside toning pull-down menu inside the Finishing section. While there isn t ways to update the contents in the pull-down menu, you are able to create presets that will likely be found inside left-hand panel. Those presets will contain all on the settings found within the right side though there isn t yet a way to make a preset for under a small sub-section with the adjustment stack.
Nik Silver Efex 2 is amazing. I put it to use a lot and many of my black white photographs that I turn out sharing feel the plugin. However, sometimes I just desire to convert to black white and add a little film grain directly inside Aperture. For that after a large amount of trial and error, I launched a grain preset that lets me achieve that without needing to experience a plugin and build an additional file. It obviously doesn t replace Silver Efex, nonetheless it s a quick as well as simple way to feature some grain to create the photos look more film-like.
One with the tutorial videos I saw re Silver Efex emphasized the importance of your calibrated monitor when you use SE2. Can you comment with this?
Also, might you recommend an inexpensive monitor calibration device for all those of us using MAC OS X 10.8 that has a retina display?
I ll use a review up later this season on some X-Rite products.
It may perhaps be a typo but 126 instead of any regular tariff of 149, is 15% rather than 75%.
Otherwise SEP 2 could be at only38!
Could someone suggest the best strategies to save images processed through Lightroom then the Nik collection I know in Photoshop I can s save as as smaller image files after they are gonna customers large quantity of files, say for just a wedding shoot. I am without doubt doing something that may very well be done more effectively/differently, but I discover that using these plugs-ins as much as I do exactly eats my drive space up incredibly fast, and makes emailing the photos, whilst jpegs very difficult. I always keep the first files upon an external drive and simply the Nik final result tiffs within my Lightroom folder no less than until the project is delivered. I hate these gaping holes inside my knowledge. Help, please, photo community!
Can Nik Silver Efex be utilized directly through Lightroom, or do I need to open with Photoshop? I use Photoshop Elements and Lightroom 4.4.
claudia, you will use Silver Efex Pro from inside Lightroom without opening Photoshop. After installing in your computer, an entry is added for the Lightroom Edit In menu found beneath the Photo menu while within the Develope module.
I m considering Silver Efex Pro but previously converted images to B W, hardly satisfied while using results. Can I use the software program on my images because they're, or do I should revert for the color?
I just downloaded the Nik Collection to experience Silver Efex Pro using Lightroom 4.4. When I attempted to edit my image, the appliance, choosing the demo option, the applying crashed. Why?
when i work over a photo with SilverEfex pro2 in photoshop, can I later restore the first raw file to its original settings unharmed like I can when changing a raw file in photoshop.
when i work over a photo with SilverEfex pro2 in photoshop, can I later restore the first raw file to its original settings unharmed like I can when changing a raw file in photoshop.
Yes, it is possible to apply silver efex pro as being a smart object, which leaves an original image untouched. Use the concert for smart filters option within the filter menu after which apply silver efex pro.
I m serious about purchasing Silver Efex pro 2 or whatsoever the latest version is. I can t find the program for sale having a price anywhere on the web. It appears even now opt for longer offered by anywhere butGoogle. So I ve been on-line at Google website. It has information in regards to the the products including Silver Efex Pro but no solution to purchase it less than handing above the order and payment without having ability to examin the product or service and it s price. Am I missing something?
Hey Tom, if you head to it ll redirect for the appropriate Google site, it is possible to click for the Try Now button to download the trial version. The applications are only available inside from the Nik Software Complete Collection by Google nice long name, eh? but when it turned out separate it cost 199.95. Now for 149.95, you have all with the products exactly what a deal!

The GoPro could be the new, must-have toy with the extreme sports crowd. But dont let your imagination hold on there! The GoPro helps you to place the viewer inside moment with good quality video and
A powerhouse in the tiny package.
Theano Nikitas explains your cameras features!
Nik Software s Color Efex Pro 3.0 is usually a bundle of filters designed to be used with photo digital portrait photography software. If you might be thinking about buying Color Efex Pro 3.0, you might be probably wondering three questions: I ve already organized a bundle for Lightroom or Photoshop how can I justify venturing out and buying a high priced add-on? Why do I need miracle traffic bot when Photoshop already incorporates filters? There are literally squint-million add-ons for Photoshop and Lightroom how do I determine which one to obtain?
I ll are able to these questions inside a moment. But first ok, i'll cover the commercial details.
Color Efex Pro 3.0 is obtainable as whether download or boxed software. The various edition options, quantity of filters, and software compatibly are shown in Table 1. Each on the Color Efex Pro 3.0 editions will run using either Windows or Mac OS X os, however, you need to specify your computer before you pay for or download the application.
This review describes Color Efex Pro 3.0 Complete edition when used in combination with Photoshop running on Mac OS X 10.6.
s partners have Nik Color Efex Pro 3.0 available. Their cost is fair and you also help to support
Photoshop, Aperture, Nikon Capture NX2
Photoshop, Aperture, Nikon Capture NX2
Photoshop, Aperture, Nikon Capture NX2, Lightroom
Table 1 : Color Efex Pro 3.0 is available in three different editions; just the Complete edition in concert with Lightroom and also Photoshop.
By the best way, don t worry concerning the Pro tacked on to your end from the name of the product. Probably someone in marketing thought the slide would sound better with yet another word within the software name but this really is software for serious amateur photographers and professionals alike.
I won t make you stay in suspense prior to the end in this review. My reply to this question is usually a resounding, Yes, if that you are a serious wedding photographer using Aperture, Lightroom, or Photoshop Color Efex Pro 3.0 Complete may be worth its cost.
I use Color Efex Pro 3.0 Complete each day that I use Photoshop, and also on almost every photo that I process. I find its value unbeatable with regards to both image enhancement along with the creative effects it includes that can be put on images. There s nothing inside filters that are included with Photoshop that compare in usefulness to many on the Color Efex Pro filters.
I ve evaluated a volume of other Photoshop filter add-ons While many are unique and have absolutely considerable value few other third-party filter collection affords the extensive variety and consistently good quality of Color Efex Pro 3.0.
Let me explain to you how Color Efex 3.0 works, and also you ll start to see what I mean.
After you ve installed Color Efex Pro 3.0 Complete, you ll get a Nik Software item for the bottom within your Photoshop Filter menu. Color Efex Pro 3.0 Complete is using a fly-out menu that appears whenever your mouse hovers above the Nik Software item. To open the Color Efex Pro filter set, click the Color Efex menu item as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1 : To open Color Efex Pro, choose its menu item, found under Nik Software within the Photoshop filter menu.
This is often a good time for you to strongly suggest that you simply take a handful of preliminary steps before you decide to open Color Efex Pro. First, it usually is a good practice to produce sure you keep your work before this step. Depending upon your software and hardware configuration, Color Efex Pro does occasionally cause Photoshop to crash.
Second, I suggest you duplicate the layer you choose to focus on, and apply your selection of Color Efex Pro filter on the duplicate layer. This will provide you with the opportunity to make use of the Color Efex Pro filter effects at reduced opacity by scaling down the opacity from the duplicate layer in which the filter was applied. You also can use a layer mask to selectively display the duplicate layer with all the effects.
Color Efex Pro can give a mechanism for painting in selective putting on its effects, but I discover the interface with this clunky. Since you may use Photoshop s layer masking features, why is it that this in an additional interface and something that during my opnion just isn't intuitively obvious?
If you ve taken my advice, and duplicated your layer before opening Color Efex Pro, make sure to set Color Efex Pro then it doesn t add just one more layer. My experience continues to be that letting Color Efex Pro do layer duplication has generated some difficulty with software stability.
To do that, once Color Efex Pro has opened, click Settings from the lower left on the Color Efex Pro window, and within the Settings dialog choose apply the filtered effect on the current layer as shown in Figure 2.
Figure 2 : I suggest duplicating the layer yourself in Photoshop, then having Color Efex Pro work directly around the duplicate layer while using Color Efex Pro settings dialog.
I m putting the cart a small amount ahead with the horse here, because I ve shown the Settings window ahead of the primary Color Efex window, which can be shown in Figure 3.
Figure 3 : The main Color Efex Pro window.
Color Efex Pro loads while using first filter to use list, B W Conversion loaded. This can be a decent monochromatic conversion filter, yet not as powerful as Nik s Silver Efex Pro which can be, in fairness, a full product devoted to non colored documents conversion or as flexible because the Black White adjustment layer feature easily obtainable in Photoshop itself.
All 52 filters are shown on the left-hand side on the window, as you may see in Figure 4.
Figure 4 : The Color Efex Pro Complete filter list.
Obviously, finding out what each filter does takes a amount of time. The name of every filter as shown in Figure 4 and Table 2 helps somewhat, however in some cases these names don t signify much. What exactly can be a Monday Morning filter? If you think of struggling to use a grainy and grim cup of nearly monochromatic coffee, feeling hung over and blurry you might be about right in my personal. This is one filter I don t use much nonetheless it may be right in your case. One with the strengths of Color Efex Pro is the fact that there is surely something for each photographer.
To truly have fun with all these filters could take many Photoshop-person years when you internalized what you are all for, and what you could do. Many with the filters themselves by way of example, Cross Processing consist of extensive sub-options. Essentially, Cross Processing is a complete world of filters inside a single filter. But read more about that within a moment.
Nik makes organizing and keeping track in the filter collection slightly easier by dividing them onto separate tabs. Color Efex Pro opens with the many filters showing, but you'll be able to click the Traditional, Stylizing, Landscape, or Portrait tabs to experience a smaller cross-section of filters. Of course, its not all effects are incredibly easily categorized or limited to one category. For example, Glamour Glow is recognized as a portrait effect, but I often put it to use on images which can be not portraits.
Divided into categories, Table 2 shows the 52 Color Efex Pro 3.0 filters some filters show up in more than one category. The sheer numerical quantity from the filters provides some idea of the a workhorse this filter pack is and almost the many filters both are robust, and consist of many sub options that may be chosen.
Table 2 : Color Efex Pro 3.0 filters organized by category.
There s a particular tab reserved with the filters you ve marked as favorite and this will likely be the most helpful approach to organize filters as soon as you ve discovered which of them you use normally.
Of course, sometimes I just want to browse almost arbitrarily. It s a fantastic way to spend time, with each time I try a fresh filter on the Color Efex pack I find a new strategy to do something. Playing while using Nik filters is actually always time spent well.
The main Color Efex Pro window has a volume of features though I won t tell you them all. As a general matter, the toolbar down the top enables you to change your viewing preferences for instance, to before-and-after as shown in Figure 5, and panel down the right-side is good for tweaking the settings made use of by individual filters see some situations below.
Figure 5 : You can customize the display in order that it shows both before and after filter effects.
I face it when it comes to Color Efex Pro, I am capricious and fickle. At times, my true loves with this filter back have ranged from Bi-Color User Defined ideal for adding graduated saturation into a sunset to Color Stylizer could be used to create a photo resemble a botanical illustration to Fog in addition to the obvious, also lightens overall.
These days, I am mostly besotted with Cross Processing, Glamour Glow, and Tonal Contrast. Let me explain to you a little of how I use each.
In the times of film, cross processing meant processing film in chemicals intended for another form of film hopefully with weird, wacky along with perhaps psychedelic effects. In digital, cross-processing means simulating the issue that film cross-processing could have had.
Color Efex Pro offers extensive drop-down number of cross-processing simulations to settle on from, loosely grouped by simulated film and chemistry type, as it is possible to see in Figure 6.
Figure 6 : You can select a number of simulated cross-processing methods.
Figure 7 shows a preview of applying the B04 C41 to E6 cross-process method that is likely not something you d would like to do for this particular image.
Figure 7 : The B04 C41 to E6 cross processing strategy is previewed.
It s usually wouldn t would like to convert a complete image while using the Cross Processing filter. However, by playing the possibilities made available about the Processing drop-down list, I ve got an enormous palette of possible color shift choices which I can readily apply selectively to servings of my photo using layers and layer masks.
The Glamour Glow filter adds warmth, tonal range between white to black, and softness. The Tonal Contrast filter boosts the tonal contrast, slightly decreases the tonal range, and adds sharpness. I like to utilize the two together together. Here s how.
First, in Photoshop before opening Color Efex Pro 3.0, I generate a copy from the image I desire to work on. Next, I go back to your original image and duplicate the backdrop layer from the original image.
With the duplicate layer active, I open Color Efex Pro 3.0, and apply the Glamour Glow filter while using default settings. I click OK to put on this filter towards the duplicate layer. I name the layer Color Efex Glamour Glow in most cases reduce its opacity to about 30%. Figure 8 shows the Photoshop Layers palette after these actions.
Figure 8 : The Glamour Glow layer has opacity reduced to 30%.
Next, I result in the duplicate copy from the original image active, and open Color Efex Pro while it's active. I choose the Tonal Contrast Filter, and within the filter preferences for Tonal Contrast check Conventional High Pass Contrast Figure 9. As you'll be able to see inside the preview window shown in Figure 10, contrast has indeed been greatly heightened, although it just isn't terribly attractive on its own.
Figure 9 : In the Tonal Contrast filter options, Conventional High Pass Contrast is checked.
Figure 10 : Preview shows the extent that tonal contrast is heightened that's often in excess of is attractive.
Next, I click OK to just accept the Color Efex Tonal Contrast filter about the duplicate image. In Photoshop, I hold about the Shift key and drag the Tonal Contrast version on top in the Glamour Glow version.
I give a Hide All layer mask towards the Tonal Contrast layer. Then I selectively paint in those areas inside the image that I think might use tonal enhancement and sharpening around their edges while using the Brush Tool set at about 30% opacity. The Layers palette shown in Figure 11 shows that this two layers that happen to be treated with Color Efex filters interact.
Figure 11 : Tonal Contrast is selectively applied over Glamour Glow.
The final image, shown in Figure 12, benefits through the application from the Glamour Glow and Tonal Contrast Color Efex filters although I do should be careful not to ever overly apply either effect. With careful application, the photo shows both a comprehensive glow and also a selective improvement in tonal contrast about the water drops, small spider, and blade of grass.
Figure 12 : After Glamour Glow at 30% and selective Tonal Contrast the style has more punch and in addition more subtlety.
Color Efex Pro 3.0 can be an important tool for each serious shooter. If there's one Photoshop add-on you purchase for creative purposes also to enhance your imagery, this would probably be it.
Pros : Most extensive filter third-party library available, well engineered professional-quality filters, intended designed for serious digital photographers, huge variety, a fantastic many options for every single filter, truly endless creative possibilities.
Cons : Expensive, such a major collection it can easily take time to chose the really useful filters, includes filters that can readily be over applied, somewhat quirky program can sometimes require work-arounds.

I really enjoyed the review on the latest version with the Nik software, but am a lttle bit disappointed that that it was never mentioned how effective Color efex Pro is the place used in partnership with Capture NX2. Capture is, within my estimation, an outstanding program and it is often overlooked with this arena.
Thanks for letting me speak my peace. Enjoy the monthly newsletters and also the website tremendously.
Color Efex comes with a option to automatically make a layer and apply the actual required filter with it. If I remember right, this would be the default option; or at the very least it somehow wound up set this way when I installed it.
I am desirous to know how it works well with Capture NX2 users. Thanks.
The Nik Color Efex Pro 3.0 is effective in Nikon NX2.
Its great to own all those filters, and you must learn what you can do.
You may use several filters together.
I also have one of the best filters in Color Efex - The full package is mandatory.
Did they fix the bug where Photoshop crashes when you apply an effect to some selection, instead in the whole layer? This happens if Color Efex tries to make a new layer together with the effect.
i have already been using color efex pro for sometime now. i needed never changed the settings, as suggested as part of your review. will make this happen and start duplicating the layer first.
I really such as the personal quality for this review. From my perspective the true issue is price on the pro vs the select edition. I would like to discover some critical discuss whether the additional pro filters are worth the excess
Bottom line: for my money, most from the filters I use regularly are inside Complete Edition, instead of the Select Edition, therefore, the Complete Edition will probably be worth the extra money in my personal.
Unfortunately these Nik filters are certainly not compatible with Aperture 3 in 64-bit mode today. Maybe at some point they will that knows?
I purchase Color Efex Pro Complete almost since it was released. I know that in case I had to use the filters I use regularly personally in Photoshop, if I could, it will take forever. The time saved at this program is really worth cost of it. In a very shorter time, it provides paid for itself. I often require a photo Im working away at and just run it through the number of filters just to determine what some choices are. The program has contributed greatly to your uniqueness of my photography. I make use of it both in NX2 plus in Photoshop. I have never had Photoshop crash when dealing with only a portion of your photograph, by just how. If youre still deciding whether or otherwise to have the the trial version first., very addicting!
I have this collection and I dont regret buying love this system, I also contain the other Nik Software and many types of wonderful filters also.
Hi, I dowloaded the trial only to check if it will be worth to buy it you aren't, Im running CS5 using a MacBookPro, when I installed Nik Color Efex 3 the installer couldnt discover the right road to install the files therefore i manually selected it HD/applications/adobe photoshop cs5/plug-in
everything looks working fine when I open PS cs5 the nik subfolder is just not there, does anybody know relating to this?
The Capture NX2 version of PRO 3.0 will set you back 179.99.
If it can be of any help to the owners of CS5 I found out the thing that was the problem, these plug-ins aren't compatible using the 64bit structure of PS CS5 yet, therefore you must run photoshop at 32 bit but not 64 bitwhich will be the default setting.

When planning this compilation of articles on plug-ins and actions, one among my considerations was what sequence presenting them. Do I cover all from the plug-ins in one developer and then the subsequent, or do I jump around from someone to another. I settled for the latter for a few reasons, the principle one being that numerous plug-ins from different developers perform similar functions also it might make more sense to complete those one after another.
With that under consideration, the subsequent posts will handle onOne Software s Photo Tools. There are many similarities between Photo Tools and Color Efex Pro as well as in this post I desire to highlight those similarities and also the many differences between two plug-ins.
Nik Color Efex Pro will come in three editions: Standard, Select and Complete with 15, 35 and 52 filters respectively. I ll be referring only for the Complete Edition here. OnOne offers a totally free version of Photo Tools with 26 effects together with the paid version with well over 300 effects. This comparison refers to the total version. If you own considered one of these plug-ins and are unclear if it s worth having the other, or should you own neither of them which enable it to only afford to get one, this post may help you decide which may be the best in your case.
Nik Color Efex Pro and onOne Photo Tools do many on the same things, and they certainly them very differently. Both plug-ins are essentially collections of effects and filters which might be applied to photos in numerous ways. Note: Color Efex Pro uses the word filters and Photo Tools uses the idea of effects to spell out the same thing inside their respective programs. I will probably be using the two terms interchangeably in the feeble work for balance impartiality.
In the two screenshots above, you may see the similarities involving the two plug-ins. I labeled some main features which are common to both:
Both plug-ins provide an extensive library of effects that happen to be organized by category. They both allow you to flag those effects which you use frequently as favorites therefore you don t need to search for them whenever you desire to use them. In addition for the library of effects, Photo Tools is included with several presets seen inside right column. These presets are combinations, or stacks of effects through the library which can be applied with single click. I ll discuss this more thorough a little later.
Both plug-ins provide controls which allow you to perfect the various filters. Each Color Efex Pro filter has several varieties of controls that permit for numerous variations. Many Photo Tools effects do not have controls by any means, and with the ones that will have them, these are mostly simple radio buttons that will make one adjustment generally.
The Loupe in Color Efex Pro and Navigator in Photo Tools perform precisely the same function, slightly differently. Both supply you with an overview from the entire image if you re zoomed into one specific area inside main preview, or even a detailed view should you re taking a look at the entire image inside main preview.
The two plug-ins provide tools for zooming, displaying the both before and after images in several ways split screen, full screen, etc., moving around the whole picture, as well as being a preview check box that compares the processed and unprocessed image. There are a some tools which are not contained in both plug-ins, including the select and background color tools in Color Efex Pro as well as the brush and masking bug tools in Photo Tools.
While you will find many similarities between filters in Color Efex Pro and also the effects in Photo Tools, you'll find even more differences. One with the most noticeable differences was in the variety of filters and effects. As mentioned earlier, Color Efex Pro has 52 filters and Photo Tools has over 300.
But numbers don t tell the entire story. Many from the effects in Photo Tools give a selection of radio buttons that permit for some variation on the effect as well as being a handful of effects that utilize the masking bug seen below, a distinctive tool that may be overlaid on the style preview and is usually a more visual substitute for using sliders to alter the effects. The rest with the effects haven't any variables. Several with the effects only focus on 8 bit images, and whenever you re taking care of 16 bit images it is usually frustrating to obtain the warning which the selected effect will only work with 8 bit images.
Another difference is speed. Both plug-ins are pretty zippy when implementing small files, but Photo Tools could get sluggish with larger files. Click on the filter in Color Efex Pro plus the preview window updates near instantaneously most in the time. Adding an impression in Photo Tools brings up slightly progress box that shows how much with the effect is loaded. The several seconds of loading time may well not seem like a large deal, however, if you re auditioning one effect after another, it will get tedious, even if the option to work with a smaller version from the image for previews is enabled.
Despite the velocity issues, one from the biggest great things about Photo Tools could be the ability to stack several effects view the right column inside the screenshot below. Click an effect within the library once and also a brief description on the effect appears in addition to any options accessible for that effect. Double click an effect plus it is added to your stack where you are able to use the Fade slider to modify the opacity of each and every effect. I haven t found any limit to the quantity of effects which can be stacked, but because stack grows, does the processing time after the Apply button is clicked. In Color Efex Pro there isn't a stacking, therefore you select a filter and rub it. Want another filter? Re-launch Color Efex Pro, select another filter and put it to use. Repeat for every single additional filter.
The two plug-ins have different methods of selectively applying filters and effects also. In Color Efex Pro you are able to click the OK button to use the filter towards the entire image or click on the Brush button to paint from the filter in a part with the image employing a layer mask. A third options adding more than one control points the small dots within the screenshot below to customize the opacity on the filter in various areas on the image. Photo Tools carries a brush tool that is going to be familiar to anyone who uses layer masks in Photoshop. There are even options to control the brush size and opacity with stylus pressure using a Wacom tablet.
When editing photos, I will often do additional work after Color Efex Pro and Photo Tools are applied to a picture. Occasionally, I realize that I need to go back to make some changes to your effect that has been applied together with the plug-ins. Depending on what sort of plug-in was applied, you can do this in some instances.
Only Color Efex Pro allows you to definitely go back and grab all within your settings when you left them. To make it happen, you ought to first convert the layer on what you apply the filter into a smart object in Photoshop
launching the plug-in. No smart object, no moving back. After you apply a filter to your smart object, you may go back anytime plus the settings will likely be exactly as they were after you clicked the Apply button.
There is another solution to go back and edit your previous settings, however it involves with your original unprocessed layer and applying the filter again. Both plug-ins allow one to create presets, nonetheless they function differently. Color Efex Pro has four Quick Save Slots for every single filter. These are great timesavers that allow you to store frequently employed settings for future access. You may use these slots to beneficial settings for a perception you re editing, re-apply the filter within the original layer and apply your preset through the Quick Save Slot. Unfortunately, control points will not be saved in these slots and if these were used, ought to be redone manually.
Photo Tools allows someone to save stacks of effects as presets, so it is possible to follow a similar procedure: Create your stack, save it to be a preset, and apply the results. If you need to generate changes, select your original layer, open Photo Tools and select your preset. The fade settings for every effect are saved, but any painting done using the brush tool are going to be gone.
The important point, no matter what which plug-in you utilize, is usually to work using a copy in the background layer and always contain the plug-in save to some new layer. If you focus on your original layer, it s possible you may cease able to return it to your original state.
Both Color Efex Pro and Photo Tools have their own strengths and weaknesses. Both can available lots of creative possibilities and produce editing your photos easier and, dare I say it, more pleasant. They are generally an indispensible component of my toolbox and incredibly often I use both plug-ins for the same photo.
Which the first is best for you personally? Maybe both, maybe neither. The easy strategy to find out if these plug-ins can boost your workflow would be to download a trial on the developer s websites. Both Color Efex Pro and Photo Tools are intuitive enough for getting good results quickly, with more time and exploration, the electricity of these plug-ins may help you transform your photographs into beautiful pieces of art.

I haven't used onOne Photo Tools, but Color Efex Pro can be an indispensable app to me. I make use of it on almost every photo I take. In fact my final results could be half pretty much as good if not for Color Efex Pro. Here I describe the filters I use most commonly plus which order:
I sometimes use Topaz Adjust also, but Color Efex Pro remains my check out app. The polarization filter as well as the pro contrast filter enhance and correct basically any image. I cannot recommend Color Efex Pro enough.
I use it like a plugin for Aperture 3.
An extremely fair and diplomatic comparison. In my experience, I discovered OnOne tools to become glitchy and lacking important features. On the other hand, I choose my Nik tools without hesitation. All of the products are exceedingly well polished and yield consistently professional results. If I could afford just one, I would immediately select Nik. But I totally have some OnOne tools Nik doesn t supply, like Bokeh.
Another prefer Color Efex Pro. I too have realized the OnOne products for being buggy and crash-prone. I use Color Efex Pro on almost any photo I edit.
I bought Nik s suite without using the others including onOne. ColourEfex Pro was my first Nik plug-in and I loved it much, I bought the rest on the suite. So I haven't any experience with Photo Tools. I really have Resize Professional from onOne and look for it slow and much less intuitive: indispensable when I have to go big.
If you're looking at deciding, Silver Efex pro is mentioned more reguarily with respect to B W conversions. That could possibly be an important decision factor: which tool do you have, and what suite are you going to grow into.
IMHO Nik software could be the best thing since Photoshop itself. I have tried both products and personally OnOne just didn t have the cut.
Another worthwhile considering is Tiffen Dfx, it's got 1000 s of digital filters based on their own well known glass filters plus others. I use it each of the time and locate it a excellent, quick and versatile program.
I am an OnOne guy, owning the complete suite. I love PhotoTools, processing many my shots through it. Because with the stackable layers if these folks were ever to make a standalone version in the program, I would even if it's just own photoshop! I know that may t happen as I am sure PhotoTools is employing code from CS. maybe THAT is the reason why some from the sluggishness. The stackable effects may be saved, it really is really allowing someone to create your individual effects that can be utilized over and over

I contain the good fortune utilizing all 4. NIK, onOne, Tiffen Dfx, and Topaz. I use NIK and onOne daily find both invaluable for differing benefits. I use Topaz next in frequency and seldom use Tiffen although which is only because I haven t spent sufficient time experimenting with it. One important fact about onOne is they offer an amazing number of Webinars that happen to be exceptional of their benefit of teaching their software. NIK has this at the same time, and seems being ramping up quickly. Bottom line it s a lovely world!
Great info and plenty of thanks for the comments. I am just exploring OnOne and also have no exposure to Nik so now my antenna are up. I develop the free version of OnOne and thus far have enjoyed utilizing it.
I use NIK software jointly with a few other plugins and discover it great! I ve been tempted with OnOne stuff although not ventured. Mainly considering their resizing plugin ex. Genuine Fractals but manipulate PhotoZoom Pro inside the past and loved it!
One more choose Nik tools not just Color Efex, but Silver Efex Pro, and others tools,
The onOne crashed my PS in 4 from more I used it note: I use PS in the VM, but only onOne tools produce problems either with vbox or vmware.
And, a minimum of inside a VM, onOne tools, can be quite slow, its work in the speed connected with an obese one-legged paraplegic three-toed sloth swimming down a river of frozen helium while chained for an osmium anchor stuck in the black hole Dark Shikari.
Thanks Bob for an outstanding review. I too use both sets, Nik and OnOne and I too find I often use both on a single image I have both full versions and Photo Tools is just part with the suite as is also ColorEfex. Silver Efex pro 2 is probably the very best B W convertor around IMHO and Viveza2 can be a superb fine tuner. Since getting OnOne I never post to web without while using output sharpener/Display mode. I work with a Mac, OS10.6 Photoshop CS5 and 12 GB Ram which assists both programs to operate fast. My third set will be the Tiffen DfX v2 which I find is a bit more based on the actual effects filters but does contain some useful effects not present in either on the other two packages.
The great thing is the fact that these packages feature free trials so I would urge individuals to try them in their own business and see what they have to can do.
I go along with Andrew about Silver Efex Pro. It s an absolute must have plug in, but I m not sure about how exactly essential I would consider ColourEfex. I prefer just how it functions PhotoTools though, so NIK wins during my mind
So no obvious recommendation. I do t be aware of the point with the article
I love Vivieza from NIK. I can set the atmosphere, the light and it also just works! sometimes for that final touch, i m using Tiffen or color effect pro and blur in PS.
I really2x love Tiffen Photo FX Ultra for iPad. Just investigate it
