I am a novice enthusiast who's fairly obsessive about image quality. Sharpener Pro 3.0 will probably be the best sharpening tool that I have ever used. It puts unsharp mask, Smart Sharpen and Focus Magic to shame. I have used it to sharpen images that I had previously sharpened by other means, and also the difference was astonishing. I don't realize why, though Sharpener Pro, I find that I can sharpen very aggressively without producing artifacts. Like other Nik products, this allows you to make localized adjustments using the greatest of ease. I cannot suppose that anyone would be under thrilled from it after a first learning period, naturally.

I love your options in this system, and bought the merchandise to help me sharpen in difficult situations. Large prints, distances, printer type, original pixel dimensions, etc. are factored in.
Unfortunately, the default settings appear over sharpened, particularly for smaller prints. Yes, smaller prints ought to be sharpened more. But the defaults are way over the top for that distances viewed. In some cases, it even color tinted complexions and white back drops blue. Yes, it sounds odd, but paid 300 to print a selection of six image samples with some other settings for image size, print size, strength, and some other options using three different print shops. I were left with about 50 photos in most, if I remember correctly. Some shops sharpen independently, so I needed to make sure and compare. In all cases, some 4x6 prints were terribly over sharpened. I sent a another batch in at 25% to 50% from the recommended value. They werent optimal, but did look far better. Although I have Aperture, these photos were done from start to finish in Photoshop, and sharpened with just the Photoshop Plugin.
Yes, I did grab the printer, distance viewed, and image size into perspective, and like I said, I printed an array of photos at different print shops.
Now the choices take most with the guess exercise of sharpening, but Ive since found Unsharp Mask and in some cases Aperture 3 sharpening more predictable than Sharpener Pro, and the tools dont add along with cast-at least at closeness. I just utilize 100% pixel view in each application, and utilize default or commonly-used settings for almost all photos. For architecture I sharpen more, and I mask for many portraits. If I were displaying an image over five feet away, or sharpening for other print media, I do use Sharpener Pro.
